Someone, please read the biographies!![edit]

There's plenty of info about Geddes on the web, and some quite good biographies: no real excuse for a page that fails to mention 75% of his life!

WikiProject class rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 16:30, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Think Global, Act Local[edit]

If you google the above saying of Patrick Geddes you are offered the Wikipedia entry for 'Think Globally, Act Locally' which is attributed to the founder of Friends of the Earth in the 1960s. Clearly this is just a hijacking of the Geddes saying, but no credit is given. I don't really want to edit either this page or that one because I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough to make a sufficient comment on the significance of the phrase, but thought I would offer up this opportunity to someone who does.Ewan carmichael (talk) 18:45, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Geddes Plan (Tel Aviv) - Tel Aviv Master plan[edit]

It is important to add reference to the Tel Aviv Atlas, {although it is in french (soon to be translated into hebrew and english)}, because one can see there unedited maps and drawings decribing precisely Geddes urban planning maestro. So, please, Hertz888, don't cancel that again without discussion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Marionpolo (talkcontribs) 16:08, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

that was the first master plan of the city. פארוק (talk) 20:33, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Patrick Geddes (comment)[edit]

Yes,who or how do we decide this is of "low importance"? And as one of the comments says, lifting one of his lines and giving it to another. It is a sad thing that for all our talk about environmentalism we know so little of the founders. Celtic Revival and Scottish renaissance[edit]

The more I look into Geddes life, the more I realise that this article really still is barely more than a Stub. It misses out vast sections of his life and work.

For example, zero mention (as yet) of this:

" ... he commissioned and subsequently worked from that iconic Arts and Crafts condominium of Ramsay Garden. There he was a moving force behind the Celtic Revival in Scotland. In due course he made common cause with the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh on the one hand and the great Gaelic scholar, Alexander Carmichael, on the other. For example Carmichael published in Geddes’ magazine The Evergreen, and his piece was introduced by a Celtic Revival initial by Helen Hay. And in The Evergreen, Geddes advocated not just a Celtic Revival but a Scottish renaissance, an idea that the poet Hugh MacDiarmid adopted to great effect. Geddes’ commitment to national revival was profoundly international in outlook. As a student, both from a scientific and a cultural perspective he was drawn to France where he studied biology in Paris and Brittany, and absorbed the sociology of Comte and the anarchist politics of the geographer Elisée Reclus... "

Life: Outlines of general biology[edit]

Can anyone find the year this was published? The page says 1863, but at that time Geddes was nine years old and hardly writing biology textbooks. 176.10.215.121 (talk) 15:45, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dundee Dates[edit]

The info box and article have different dates for his time at Dundee with the former saying it ended in 1914 and the latter 1919. Also the former gives his start date as 1889 the latter as 1888 sources would seem to suggest the later is correct in terms of when he was employed, so I have changed the info box. Château d’Assas[edit]

A sentence without reference has been added here on 12 September 2015 as well as in the Wikiarticle about Château d’Assas in Montpellier, asserting that 1°/ Patrick Geddes bought it “at the beginning of the 1920s” and 2°/ that PG founded the Collège des Écossais in Montpellier “in 1890”.

It would be very important to know where does that come from.

Important as regards to the Collège which, up to now, PG is supposed to have founded when coming back from India, in 1924. (Even if he undoubtedly had it in mind much before, probably during his very first stay in France when he was studying in Paris and Roscoff.)

As regards to the château d’Assas, maybe it would help to understand why there is not a trace left there of any PG’s intervention, either in the fields of city planning, education, community building, gardening or botany…

So, thanks a lot to anybody who can indicate some references about these facts and dates.

Horribly sloppy editing[edit]

Piles of failed confirmation situations, inaccurate quotes, messy source details, and, and, and.

I've wasted hours fixing it and... the internet connection collapsed, all gone. I won't go back to it, enjoy.

It's a shame, as the article does read nicely and it covers many interesting topics about a fascinating man. Shame one cannot trust the references.

A seriously flawed set of quotations regards "Geddes in India", a collection of reports written by Geddes and the most quoted source in the article (and for a good reason so). At least two quotations are not even from this book, zero doubt about it (I've checked it end to end, they're nowhere to be found). Many, if not most of the other references, are seriously faulty. The book editor, Tyrwhitt, quotes Geddes incl. the original p. no. of his respective report, and then there are the p. nos. of the book itself. Every original report starts with p. 1, and there are for instance several p. 17 passages from different reports, so the report p. no. is not very useful, only the book p. no. would be if it were correct. But the Wiki editor has mixed the two types of p. nos. copiously, to the point of making their entire referencing work worthless.

A good chunk of the "further reading" titles are already in the references section. Every other reference uses a different template. And it goes on and on. Arminden (talk) 19:34, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
