University of Chicago updates[edit]

I am making updates to the Alivisatos wikipage to reflect his new position as president of The University of Chicago which include revisions in the following sections: Overview, Personal Life, Notable publications, and two new subsections; one for University of Chicago (to appear below "Patents") and Personal Life (to appear below "Lawrence Berkeley National Lab". In full transparency I am affiliated with the University of Chicago Office of Communications and I welcome your edits. StickerMug (talk) 15:31, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@StickerMug: Thank you for disclosing your conflict of interest. For future reference, we generally prefer editors with conflicts of interest to request edits on the talk page instead of editing articles directly. Your additions seem to mostly be fine, though I have some concerns about these two edits:
  • [1], which added language from a press release that seems unnecessarily flowery.
  • [2], which added a variety links to external lectures to the article. It's quite hard to tell how "notable" these lectures are... they certainly are not notable in the Wikipedia sense of the term (i.e. they do not have their own articles). Published papers often go through a rigorous review process and are included in articles, but I think that recorded lectures are less commonly included. My issue is with the existence of this section at all rather than your expansion of it. I will probably remove this section, and if someone disagrees with its removal they can discuss on the talk page.

@MysterymanBlue: Thank you for your feedback. In regards to #2 — the external links to videos — I contributed four additional lecture videos to an existing list that seemed to me on-par "notable lecture" videos that were already included in this entry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by StickerMug (talkcontribs) 23:06, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@StickerMug: Yes, I agree that you did nothing wrong by expanding the section... I just don't think it belongs in an encyclopedic article.  Mysterymanblue  05:26, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
