Criticism[edit]

Mr. Harvey has also been criticized for his "rest of the story" segment using urban legends as facts, including, most notably, his rest of the story on Mel Gibson. 68.12.224.100 18:41, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ThinkProgress.org does not cite any other source for the claim about what Paul Harvey said about the weapons "in their silos." I spent quite some time looking for a source on this, and could find no reliable sources. Most cite each other. There is not a single reference to it in any academic site or mainstream news site. The lack of reliable sources, coupled with the fact that things like this are falsely attributed to people like Paul Harvey and Andy Rooney all the time (see snopes.com for myriad examples), mean that the the passage is certainly false. Penitent 01:29, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The simple fact that Harvey made Olberman's list does not qualify as criticism, especially since the Olberman link doesn't refer to any specific mention of Harvey. With better sourcing, the items above may be suitable for that section. But for now, no criticism sourcing =- no criticism section.
Depression? I heard that Paul Harvey suffers from severe depression and has had ECT performed on several occasions. any sources?

What happened to the "sugar candy" monologue?[edit]

Why is the "sugar candy" monologue no longer here? I see someone removed it here without comment; was not restoring it just an oversight? I'd expect to see some discussion here if that were not the case. superlusertc 2007 August 03, 05:34 (UTC)

arr, gone.[edit]

I do see that Argonne is mentioned above; but it is not in the actual article. Considering that it is published on a government webpage, & seemingly well written, I do not comprehend why most, or all, of it is not simply copied. With these factors the only necessary editing is regarding any format corrections to fit these pages. Is there any assertion that it is less than accurate?

I just learned of this from Keith_Olbermann, msnbc.

Paul Harvey different from Bill Stern[edit]

There was one distinct difference between Paul Harvey's Rest Of The Story and Bill Stern: Harvey at least tries to verify all of his items and would not knowingly spread an urban legend. Since this page is locked, I posted this info on the Paul Harvey Quotes stub. Also, you might want to note on external links that Paul Harvey News up to 7 days old can be heard on his official website, both morning and noon broadcast, but not Rest Of The Story, which is never archived there. He also seems to get some of his items from Ripley's Believe It Or Not, and Ripley was never proved wrong on any of his stories. Scifans (talk) 09:30, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Harvey riddle[edit]

I don't know if this is worth adding, but it gets a ton of google hits:

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=paul+harvey+riddle&meta=

78,600 to be precise.

The content is this:

'The riddle: What is greater than God, More evil than the devil, The poor have it, The rich don't need it, And if you eat it, you'll die?

The answer to the riddle is "nothing." Nothing is greater than God. Nothing is more evil than the Devil. The poor have nothing. The rich need nothing. And if you eat nothing, you'll die.'

Worth adding or not? A well known e-rumour Dyinghappy (talk) 00:50, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good one, but I very much doubt it's original to Harvey, as most of his material comes from elsewhere. And that's the rrrrrrrrrest of the story. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 01:28, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was not saying it was original to Harvey. It is attributed to him, however. It is in various "busting e-rumour" web sites, and every single time the allegation is that he wrote it, all proven false. Do we include such things? It just seemed odd that Wikipedia would be the one place where it doesn't mention this well-known e-rumour. Dyinghappy (talk) 02:27, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's just a cute riddle. "Rumour"? A rumour (or rumor) would be that he had a fling with Kate Smith or something. This is just a story often credited to him. So, if you can either find evidence that he has told this story, or evidence that he has not, from reliable sources, then you've got a fact. The next question is whether the fact is notable or important enough to be part of an article about Harvey. That could prove to be your larger challenge. He's told thousands of stories over the years. What's the big deal about this one? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 03:06, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
79,700 google hits, and the fact that I got the same stupid "riddle" 4 times, it has write ups in snopes and yahoo questions and various other reliable places. That's what makes it notable. Dyinghappy (talk) 11:20, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Calling it a "rumour" implies some sort of scandal. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 12:58, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The term "rumour" is not my wording, it is from all of the various myth-busting web sites. If you prefer the term "myth" then go with that. There is no scandal; it is merely something that is falsely attributed to him. Dyinghappy (talk) 03:30, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have those myth-busting websites determined the true origin of this riddle? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 03:34, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As per usual, the snopes version is the best [2]. Unfortunately, even they couldn't figure out where the riddle came from. Dyinghappy (talk) 18:36, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Voice Problems[edit]

Is there any information on the recent degradation of his voice quality? The tone and volume of his voice is notably weaker than a couple of years ago and I wondered if there had been any particular medical event. His current limitation seems a bit beyond the semi-paresis imposed by advancing age--more typical of nerve damage to the pharyngeal musculature of known or unknown etiology. His entire career and public life rests on his vocal production, so the matter is relevant for entry here. 70.130.36.59 (talk) 23:08, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The man is 91. And paresis is a consequence of syphillis, so be careful what you say here. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 23:40, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What is it with this article[edit]

Just casually I have visited this again after maybe a 7 month period. There were several things in the article that were interesting , notably that he was discharged with a section 8 from the military and that he stole an airplane of all things and then the "sugar candy" story was removed I guess and then the story (although in discussions ) of his trying to break into the Argonne lab. This all points to the problem with Wikipedia -- that if it gets controversial you cannot depend on its validity. What is the use in a continually changing story -- what is truth-- or do I not get Wikipedia? 138.163.0.43 (talk) 15:38, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Hardley[edit]

Is anyone aware of a "Paul Hardley" or "Paul Hardly" character that was on syndicated FM morning show in the 1990s, at least in the southern U.S.? It was 5-minute spoof of Paul Harvey that was part of the morning show, replete with all the vocal mannerisms. It was not locally produced to my knowledge. If enough people have heard of this, it might be good for a cultural reference. -Rolypolyman (talk) 18:29, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Natural causes?[edit]

They still don't know he died, but my friend told me he died of old age. He was 90, so it seems like it was the cause. But is natural causes true, or did something else kill him? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.37.139 (talk) 02:01, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Protestant[edit]

An editor has been continually adding this article to the "American protestants" category, which has been continually removed as no source has apparently been presented, and no supporting statement is currently in the article. The editor in question keeps returning it claiming we are "wrong" that it isn't in the article. As you can see right now, there is no mention of the word "protestant" in this article, so a source needs to be presented. --OuroborosCobra (talk) 19:07, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The article currently contains the following paragraph, including three citations:

Harvey was a convert to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was baptized into the church around the year 2000. Harvey regularly attended the Camelback Adventist Church in Scottsdale, Arizona during his winters there. He often quoted Adventist pioneer Ellen G. White in his broadcasts and received the "Golden Microphone" Award for his professionalism and graciousness in dealing with the church. [3][4][5]

Having said this, however, all interested editors should review the section toward the top of this Talk Page labeled "Seventh Day Adventist?". This discussion raises doubts about whether Harvey was formally an Adventist or only a "fellow traveler", as it were. The source for the statement that Harvey formally converted in 2000 appears to be this page at adherents.com; however, the source given on that page seems to be a dead link, and I couldn't find any other sources for the alleged 2000 conversion that didn't seem to be mirrors of adherents.com or Wikipedia. Paul Batura's recent biography[6] states that Harvey was not a baptized Adventist and actually baptized in 1971 (this is at pp.183-185: using the Amazon.com reader, search the words "baptism" and "baptized" to get to the applicable pages). The book does, however, make a clear (if agenda-driven) case for Harvey's status as a committed Christian. Other sources mention that he came from a long family line in the Reformed Church.
So, as discussed in the earlier section here, there's a lot to suggest that the 2000 Adventist conversion may be what some Adventists refer to as an "Adventist Urban Legend": Harvey and his wife were obviously friendly to the Adventist cause, but perhaps not members themselves. His status as a non-specific Protestant seems clearer, however. Thus, it appears that as between Category:American Seventh-day Adventists and Category:American Protestants it is more judicious to use the more general category.
--Arxiloxos (talk) 20:09, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you are unable to link him to any specific denomination, and only have quotes saying he was a "devoted Christian," wouldn't Category:American Christians be more apt? --OuroborosCobra (talk) 02:11, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point. Although there's certainly no suggestion he was Catholic or Orthodox, and it was not illogical for the other editor to put him in with the Protestants, you may well be right that "American Christians" is more appropriate, unless and until more specific info turns up. And the paragraph about Adventism needs to be supplemented with the contrary info noted above.--Arxiloxos (talk) 02:32, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If he did regularly attend the Camelback Adventist Church though he wasn't a formal member then I'm not sure if it would be fair to say he was a Seventh-day Adventist but it would be fair to say he was a Protestant. --Protostan (talk) 03:16, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, here's what Paul Batura says (handtyped by me from p.182, typos are possible):

In his religious observances, Harvey was not overly concerned about the doctrinal differences within particular Christian denominations. Though a descendent of five generations of Baptist ministers, his earliest years were spent in First Presbyterian in Tulsa . . . he later worshipped right near his house at the Church of God . . . For the rest of his life, he and Lynne would swing back and forth between varying congregations, depending upon where he was living on any particular Sunday.

(He goes on to mention Harvey's connection with a Baptist church in Dallas and a Presbyterian one in Chicago, as well as the Adventists in sunny Arizona.) These are all indeed Protestant churches. Nevertheless, under standard Wikipedia sourcing rules, I agree with OuroborosCobra that since the sources all use the word "Christian" and not "Protestant" it's more appropriate to use "Christian" for the category--especially given the overall message here that Harvey didn't care about doctrine, and was more interested in the basic Christian message.--Arxiloxos (talk) 03:37, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the question now is did he identify himself as a member of any church in his final years? --Protostan (talk) 04:05, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You are free to present an actual source if you can find one. You are not free to speculate an answer that is not actually in the source. --OuroborosCobra (talk) 04:22, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HP purported did NOT circulate this UL.[edit]

" However, at least one urban legend has been circulated with Harvey as the purported source,[15] ..." If you check the source, you'll discover that the stress is on PURPORTED - the author strongly indicates that this is NOT a PH story -jus tthe sort of story that the author claims PH perpetrated. This in effect makes using this ref. and the sentence -- at least as it stands -- improper here. Kdammers (talk) 02:33, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
