BALI, Indonesia (CNN) -- In a dramatic reversal Saturday, the United States rejected and then accepted a compromise to set the stage for intense negotiations in the next two years aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.

The White House, however, said in a statement that it still has "serious concerns" about the agreement.
"The negotiations must proceed on the view that the problem of climate change cannot be adequately addressed through commitments for emissions cuts by developed countries alone. Major developing economies must likewise act," the White House said.
Under the global warming pact, negotiating rounds would end in 2009.
The head of the U.S. delegation, Paula Dobriansky, undersecretary of state for democracy and global affairs, announced the United States was rejecting the plan. Her comments were met by booing from other delegations.
The White House said the negotiations must "clearly differentiate" and link responsibility with the level of emissions, size of the economy and energy use among developing countries.
"In our view, such smaller and less developed countries are entitled to receive more differentiated treatment so as to more truly reflect their special needs and circumstances," the statement said.



After Dobriansky's announcement, a delegate from the developing country of Papua New Guinea challenged the United States to "either lead, follow or get out of the way."
Five minutes later, when it appeared the conference was on the brink of collapse, Dobriansky took the floor again to say the United States was willing to accept the arrangement. Applause erupted in the hall and a relative level of success for the conference appeared certain.

"Crumpled"[edit]

I have reverted the unsigned edit which added "crumpled and" to the following text:

"Following these remarks, Dr. Dobriansky crumpled and declared that the U.S. would agree to the consensus and be involved in the climate treaty. "

General comments[edit]

1) The current version reads like a campaign biography. For instance, it says that she "served in key roles as a diplomat and policy maker in the administrations of five U.S. presidents, both Democrat and Republican". In fact her roles in the Carter and Clinton administrations were very minor -- she was a college-age intern under Carter. Similarly, her work with the Bali Road Map is given a very positive spin; however, this was just a prelude to the Copenhagen conference, and Copenhagen is not considered a great success.

2) The photograph appears to be 15-20 years old. A more recent image can be found here: http://witnesstohistory.georgetown.edu/witness/wp-content/themes/witness/images/player_Dobriansky.jpg

3) There's no mention of her work with the Project for a New American Century, or her vocal advocacy for an attack on Iraq.

4) There's no mention of her current employment (executive Vice President for Thomson Reuters).

5) There's no mention of her work with the Romney campaign in 2012 -- she was a senior foreign policy advisor.

Going to let this sit a bit before editing. Other comments?

I am willing to help make appropriate revisions, but I need to review WP:BLP carefully. I think we need to verify any material, use high-quality sources, and make sure the entry is written dispassionately. Athoughtforyou (talk) 18:29, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There's no shortage of material -- a moment with google finds a dozen or more biographies of her online. Many of them are simply cut-and-pasting the same material, of course. Still, there's a fairly detailed bio at rightweb http://www.rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/dobriansky_paula. A 2010 interview with her at the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/21/AR2010032102414.html provides some additional information.
One additional item that doesn't appear above: she was the US Special Envoy to Northern Ireland for the last two years of the George W. Bush administration, 2007-2009. She does not appear to have been very active in the role; however, it gave her the formal title of Ambassador, which she still uses today.

I think for a living person, citation to the self-published RightWeb, which presents a biased view ("Tracking militarists’ efforts to influence U.S. foreign policy"), would be inappropriate. In addition, I urge caution in how you make edits. Earlier, you set forth the view that Dr. Dobriansky's time in the Carter Administration was that of a college-age intern, but now the Washington Post interview you provided shows that she was hired full-time by the National Security Council. Similarly, you state the opinion "She does not appear to have been very active in the role" as US Special Envoy to Northern Ireland. That would be a difficult conclusion to provide a source for.
