Student newspaper controversy

Tdjohnson reverted a change where I added a section discussing the controversy surrounding The Peru State Times, the student newspaper. Now I felt that the information should be there, and so does an editor, Adrian M. H..

Here is the original text for the section. You will note that, despite what Tdjohnson said in her comment for the revert, this information is far from speculative:

Peru State College and its president, Ben Johnson, have twice been accused of attempting to censor the student newspaper, The Peru State Times, through intimidation and other tactics. Two faculty advisers to the publication have been terminated, and those terminations appear to coincide with the publication of controversial articles in the student newspaper.

As of May 2006, Peru State Times adviser and Assistant Professor of English Druann Durbin, Ph.D, was dismissed from her role and duties at Peru State College.[1] During her terminal year at Peru State, she was also not permitted to be the Times adviser. Officially, Dr. Durbin was dismissed due to not supporting college policies and poor professional development.

However, Dr. Durbin felt that she was dismissed following the publication of articles critical of the college and/or its administration.[1] The articles in question talked about budget cuts, college spending,[1] and, in the case of those that allegedly led to her termination, the termination of two athletic coaches [2]. The college administration refutes this claim, citing official causes for the termination. Dr. Durbin has also stated that she has seen students verbally reprimanded by Ben Johnson, a claim the college also refuted.

In April 2000, Ben Johnson fired Peru State Times adviser and English instructor Matt Mauch after the publication of an article regarding a sexual assault on campus.[3] Mauch openly accused the college administration of actively attempting to prevent coverage of the sexual assault. The college did not publicly refute the claim, but instead said Mauch's termination was not related to his work on the newspaper.[4] The article in question was written by then-Editor-in-Chief Kathy Chase and was said to be critical of campus security.

Following the termination, the Peru State Times published an edition with an all-black cover in protest. An on-campus protest and petition drive followed the announcement of Dr. Durbin's termination.[2]

In both cases, a college spokesperson stated that the administration was appreciative of the Times and its writers and staff. Also in both cases, students accused the administration of censorship and attempting to control the newspaper and its content through intimidation.

Now it has been proposed by Adrian M. H. that I change some of the language simply because of how it is worded, but otherwise this should not have been reverted, meaning the section is not unnecessary to the Peru State College page. Now that first paragraph could be more better worded, I agree, but it is a summary paragraph that, I feel, does not need citations simply because it leads into the rest of the section.

So I will change "appear to coincide" to just "coincide", simply because the terminations did coincide with the publication of a controversial article, both did, as the rest of the section discusses. Other than that, I probably just need to lace it with more reference tags, or move existing tags into better locations.

I also specified that additional citations were needed in addition to the rewording, because some of the strongest claims had not been backed up by citations. You will need to address Tdjohnson's concerns in this respect. EA discussion is here. Adrian M. H. 22:54, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Notable Alumni

A discussion more about conflict of interest than maintaining the notable alumni list in the article

The articles we create will have minimal impact on the promotion of the college, but will recognize previously unrecognized leaders, scientists and artists. I have not removed anyone from this article, and the alumni that were removed by other editors had no wikiarticles to show their notability. Please read WP:NLIST. Meters (talk) 23:23, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

They are not authorized to represent the school. I tried to do it, but you have replaced it for unknown reasons.

Long story short, we'd like to remove the comment because we think it violates the disruption and impersonating rules. Since I now, apparently, have a conflict of interest, I need something else. Please review my edits to the page. I think the citations speak for themselves, but the Neal Hall edit is because that place is empty [1].

Thank you for clarifying why you removed Neal Hall from the article. I gathered that was the situation from your edit summary.
As for this thread... Talk page policies say that threads should be preserved as a history of discussion. It may be useful to another editor to see that there was a COI situation and understand what happened. I'm going to boldly suggest a middle ground and collapse the discussion.
