What a terrible photo of him, you can't see his face! tildetildetildetilde —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.161.152.25 (talk) 23:31, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As of 1 October, the picture is still very unpleasant to watch

2010 interview[edit]

The 2010 interview section (still visible in version 449178072 of page) has a non-wikipedian narrative style, and uses only one source for a 500-words-minimum paragraph. Furthermore, that source requires a subscription to the Irish Times to be read [1]. Removal?

Image[edit]

Why do you want to use an image that's more than three decades old? BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 13:18, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's his official portrait, the age is completely irrelevant. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 13:24, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"Official portrait" is a stretch - it's his official work photo (much like the one from my own work ID badge), from one of the many jobs and positions he held over the years. Some such official ID photos also get used on official websites. Why use one arbitrarily from one position, 36 years ago, and not the one from his time as AG, or chairman of Goldman Sachs, or - more usefully - a more recent photo, that looks much more like the person we knew in latter years?! BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 13:56, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a stretch, this is his official portrait from the European Commision. It's a common but false argument that infobox images should always be the most recent one, and especially false when the subject is no longer active or alive to still be recognised. This is an accurate representation of him at a significant point in his life, and we're looking for a high-quality image; it would be WP:RECENTISM to sacrifice quality just for a snapshot that was simply taken more recently. The portrait perfectly meets the criteria set out at WP:INFOBOXIMAGE. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 14:13, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see, one's a "portrait" - official, no less - which you just happened to upload, and the other is just a "snapshot". :-) No ownership there whatsoever. Again, so what if one is an "official portrait" from the EC? He went on to be the first DG of the WTO, and became chair of Goldman Sachs. Those roles are equally as important as being one of seventeen EC Commissioners. The WP:RECENTISM essay doesn't apply to photographs or images. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 15:03, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I did upload it and fought hard to get permission for it from the owners, because it was the first example I came across of the type of image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference works. The image you're proposing has been criticised before (see the second comment under #Image, which was made in response to this revision of the article from 2011). It's a snapshot because Peter Sutherland isn't formally sitting for the photo, he's not even facing the camera. As for the essay, it's relevant insofar as the bias towards recent media is concerned, which all too often lacks in perspective. If we had a portrait of comparable quality from his days at WTO or Goldman Sachs, that would of course be acceptable, but unfortunately Commons only holds three images of him and, of the three, the portrait is the best we have. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 15:27, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's some incisive criticism, all right, one comment in response to an image that had been there for months at that stage? 🙄 Whatevs. Own away. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 16:28, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
