Coordinate error[edit]

{{geodata-check}}

The following coordinate fixes are needed for Pevensey Bail railway station. The marker should be at 50°49'3.54"N 0°20'36.17"E but its about 600 feet southwest of there. —98.246.156.76 (talk) 01:41, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

One second of arc is approximately 30 metres (100 feet), so giving coordinates to one hundredth of a second implies an accuracy of 30 centimetres - one foot - which is overprecise. Rounding your figures to one tenth of a second (3 m, or 10 ft) gives 50°49′3.5″N 0°20′36.2″E / 50.817639°N 0.343389°E / 50.817639; 0.343389; the present coords, if converted to DMS, are 50°49′1.2″N 0°20′34.8″E / 50.817000°N 0.343000°E / 50.817000; 0.343000. The difference between the two is 2.3″N, 1.4″E, so the error - if error there is - is less than 90 m (300 ft). The station platforms lie on a NNE-SSW alignment, and are over 100 metres long, so an error of less than the platforms length is within acceptable limits. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:58, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and refined the coords by adding another decimal place. The ones formerly in the article indicated a spot that was noticably to the south of the station on online maps. Deor (talk) 12:42, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
