Untitled[edit]

Approaching Piltown from the west (N24 from Carrick-on-Suir) the unmissable landmark of "the Tower" (or Sham Castle) will be before you - this is a monument dating back to the Napololeanic era dedicated to the son of a local nobleman. However, these days the upper section of this monument is used as a water tower. Piltown also has a unique place in English (yes, English!) history as it was the only site on the island of Ireland where a battle in the War of the Roses took place viz a viz The Battle of Piltown (1462). This battle took place between the Butlers of Kilkenny and the Ormondes of Munster. Local folklore claims that the battle was so bloody the the local river ran red with blood, hence the Pill River and Piltown (Baile an Phuill - Town of the blood), although this theory has often been scoffed at.TC70 14:00, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks TC. I'll have to edit this a bit and put it back in the article. (Sarah777 21:23, 17 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Baile an Phuill - Town of the blood WRONG

Town of the blood would be Baile na Fola. The nominative form Fuil sounds like the lenited genitive form of Poll (Phuill or Phoill). This is a classic example of folk etymology by english speakers with a cursory knowledge of Irish. Poll means Hole. The unlenited genitive form Poill could be phonetically translated to English as Pil hence Piltown. Fuil on the other hand would not get you Piltown. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.191.225.242 (talk) 16:17, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Last battle of the War of the Roses was at Stoke Field in England in 1487, Fitzgerald/Yorkist army from Ireland. The Irish kerne were slaughtered in the Bloody Gutter - maybe a link there in the folklore.

40000 Butler dead?[edit]

That's not correct. They didn't have battles that huge back in the day. Kilkenny County Council website - http://tour.kilkennycoco.ie/history.html says 400, which sounds far more reasonable cannywizard (talk) 20:06, 18 February 2009 (UTC).[reply]
