just read through this, it seems odd to me that the article describes this as a "hypothetical" attack; when there has been one documented case. one case is probably not very significant relative to it's prevalence of the myth, but never the less there seems to be a conflict here.

interestingly the context of this phenomina seems to me very similar to other events usually described as "mass hysteria", where social anxiety manifests in an unfounded belief of attack/illness.
