Howdy! I'm CaptainEek, a botanist (and big fan of Mendel). I saw that this article was almost criminally underpowered, and I'm working to spruce it up. I am however not an expert in genetics: I deal with genetics occasionally, but if you are an expert in genetics (or know one!) your help would be greatly appreciated. If you have suggestions or know specific things that make plants different than the rest of life in the genetic sense, leave them below, or better yet: edit the main article! Structure of the article[edit]

This article seems oddly structured to me, in that it jumps from an introduction, to DNA, and then to Gregor Mendel. [X] A section on history could incorporate material on Gregor Mendel. [X] A section on the nature of inheritance could likewise incorporate material on DNA, but probably needs to discuss the issue of multiple genomes (nuclear, mitochondrial and plastid) which is so important in plants. [] I'm unsure of how much detail to go into on basic genetics given that it's covered in other articles, e.g. genetics and DNA.

What about having a "Methods" section, which would include transformation (already discussed to some extent) along with sequencing and mapping, and probably other techniques such as comparative genomics? Similarly, there could be an "Applications" section which would probably incorporate existing material on genetic modification (GM), along with relevant material on plant breeding, conservation and ecology. I think the existing pro- and anti-GM sections can probably be incorporated under a single heading, with subsections.

Tiny correction on DNA[edit]

Just a thought on this statement: "Plants, like all other known living organisms, pass on their traits using DNA". I'm pretty sure some bacteria uses RNA exclusively, so it might be worth changing "all" to "most" or "many" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.1.251.186 (talk) 02:58, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
