La Trobe Oral Health[edit]

We are a group of La Trobe Oral Health students doing our final year of an undergraduate degree. Part of the course we need to pick a Wikipedia site and edit it to make it more accurate and a useful tool of information.

One of the things I had in mind is to expand on the ecological plaque theory heading. The intention is to discuss the implication of this theory for the dental health professional and how it impacts the way in which they can control the caries disease. If we believe that dental caries results from an ecological disturbance in the biofilm, what are the strategies for dealing with the disease. I will discuss the use of strategies that restore the ecological balance of the microbial community, such as biofilm control, saliva stimulation and sugar control.

Current understanding shows that dental plaque biofilm is an essential aetiological agent of the common forms of chronic gingivitis and periodontitis ^[1]. I have noticed that the periodontal disease is not discussed on this page. The plaque hypothesis applies equally to periodontal disease and it can also be elaborated by our group. Additionally, we aim to further explore the specific and non specific plaque hypotheses, to discuss the origins and history with when the theories and concepts were formulated. This information will be made to support what the etiological plaque hypotheses surrounds and more current evolved concepts with their association to dental caries and periodontal disease . Hey everyone, I was thinking of changing the format to first have description/context of each hypothesis, then going on to describe the relationship between caries/perio disease for each hypothesis. It just seems more straightforward and easier to follow. Might also change the language and sentence structure a bit as some people reading the page may not be able to understand the vocabulary which detracts from understanding the content properly. I agree, I also think that the first paragraph could use some fixing up as it looks a bit messy. Also I would like to add a little summary in of who created each theory, what do you think? and do you think it would be better putting it at the top of the page or in the caries section? @Valincaphan: I've removed the bit about the garden; remember here you can't put just your own thoughts or unreferenced material on the page.
