Expansion and cleanup[edit]

This article could use some expansion and cleanup. Half of the article is about a sub-type of a sub-type of plating. I think that the advantages and disadvantages should be summarized in a few sentences to trim that section down. The other sections just need expansion. Electro Plating[edit]

I disagree. There is a need for an article providing an overview of plating as a whole. Electroplating is just one branch of the subject. True, the ionic metal content and behavior-modifying-additives are similar in both electro- and electroless, but adding the reducing agent to the plating solution is a big step and bears extra space to focus on it's implications. And there are so many distinct plating recipes, that expanding the tree they all hang upon will be helpful. errata from chemist[edit]

Nickel-cobalt plating, like plated wire core memories from the fifties? Brass (alkaline copper zinc cyanide) plating far more common. Most printed circuit board shops did solder plating (ours was Lead Tin Flouborate). Shjacks45 06:30, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree the article needs significant expansion. Since the topic is so vast, it might be well to have several articles, as well as links to more technical sources. This is one of those subjects which is hard to throttle, once one gets interested. If my experience is typical, then it would be a service to point readers where to go to find in-depth information.

Cadmium toxicity[edit]

Cadmium toxicity isn't just an environmental issue, if you try to gas or arc weld something cad plated and breath just a tiny wiff of the vaporised cadmium oxide it's goodnght nurse. See

The discussion of cadmium plating said it was being phased out due to its "toxicity and corrosivity issues." The cited reference only discussed the toxicity, and since "corrosivity" isn't one of cadmium's problems (I've worked on plenty of projects to try to find decent cad substitutes and "corrosivity" isn't a cited problem), I deleted the "and corrosivity." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.35.35.35 (talk) 18:06, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Link to Japanese Article[edit]

This page does not have a link to the Japanese equivalent　めっき. Instead, the Gilding article in English links to it. I am neither an expert in the field of plating, nor am I an expert at wikipedia, however I understand that gilding refers specifically to the artistic sort of gold plating, whilst this page is more to do with commercial/manufacturing uses of plating.

 I made the change mentioned above about a week after I posted my last message, but a bot reverted it.
 If other editors were to look at the Japanese page めっき they would see that the English
