In Michigan: - A county is an administrative division of the state and a township is an administrative division of a county. Townships may be general law townships or charter townships. - A general law township is subject to county oversight and generally may not refuse a request by a neighbouring city to annex land under its jurisdiction. - A charter township is fully self-governing and has full control over the land in its boundaries, so that it need not allow any neighbouring city to annex any of its land. - A city is a municipal corporation that is located within the boundaries of a county or counties but not within the boundaries of any surrounding township. Cities report to state government through the county or counties in which they are located but are not subject to any control by county governments. This is because all cities in Michigan are charter cities with home rule and, thus, are fully autonomous municipal corporations. - A village is a municipal corporation that is partially autonomous. Unlike cities, villages are located within a township or townships, and they are subject to township oversight as well as county oversight, to a greater or lesser degree depending on whether they are general law villages or home rule villages. - Under the Michigan Constitution, the 15 state universities are autonomous jurisdictions whose lands are separate from and not subject to the jurisdiction of any neighbouring county, township, city, or village. Authority of the state legislature and executive over the state universities is also limited, but the state judiciary, by its nature, has unlimited authority over legal questions and controversies that involve the state universities. For most functional purposes, state universities are treated as though they were part of the local communities to which they are adjacent, but they are legally separate from them. Thus, for example, children born on the University of Michigan Medical Campus are recorded as having been born in Ann Arbor; but the University has its own ZIP Code (48109), its own police force, and the City of Ann Arbor is justifiably very annoyed when the University buys or leases a new building that was previously in its jurisdiction, because doing so removes that property from the city's jurisdiction and from the city's property tax base - because none of the 15 state universities pays any tax.

Plymouth Charter Township, Michigan → Plymouth Township – "Plymouth Township" is the common name. The official name is "Charter Township of Plymouth," but nearly everyone refers to it as "Plymouth Township." Wikipedian77 (talk) 20:41, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
