Untitled[edit]

The Ponce de Leon was not poured concrete that I am aware of. I attended Flagler College. It was built entirely of coquina, which I believe is actually mined. Please check this fact if there is some way to do so. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.31.19.50 (talk) 19:57, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An visual examination of the walls reveals that the they are indeed, poured concrete. The joints between the successive pours are clearly visible and the texture of the walls is not at all like coquina. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.44.127.98 (talk) 14:19, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Still hotel?[edit]

The building is still a hotel, right? --RThompson82 (talk) 08:06, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 6 May 2016[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: moved. There is a clear consensus that the hotel, as apart from the man for which it was named, did not include the diacritic in its name, and that reliable English sources generally follow suit. For these reasons, in accordance with WP:AT, the article will be moved to "Ponce de Leon Hotel". (non-admin closure) RGloucester 04:44, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ponce de León HotelPonce de Leon Hotel – While the man Ponce de León is accented, it should not be used on a U.S. hotel. It is never used on any of the many postcards with pictures of the hotel. See https://www.cardcow.com/search3.php?section=all&s=Ponce+de+leon+hotel&x=30&y=11. It was never used (León) while the hotel was operating. deisenbe (talk) 01:50, 6 May 2016 (UTC) --Relisted. • Oppose per quality English print sources which use full fonts, e.g. Eyewitness Travel Family Guide Florida 2015 "Flagler intended the Ponce de León Hotel to be “the world's finest hotel” of its time. Now a part of Flagler College, its splendid carvings and curved arches are worth a look." The Rough Guide to Florida 2015 "Now a liberal arts campus, it was completed by Henry Flagler in 1888 as the Ponce de León Hotel, the cornerstone of his plan to remake St Augustine into a lavish winter retreat of the nation's rich and mighty." etc. etc. In ictu oculi (talk) 07:01, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
But the New York Times does not, and it is a more reliable spurce, with an internal style guide for writers, than either of the sources above: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A0DE2DE113BF935A35756C0A9649D8B63&nytmobile=0.
The Archives and Library of the state of Florida do not: https://www.floridamemory.com/solr-search/results/index/page/1?q=%28%22Ponce+de+leon+hotel%22+OR+tt%3A%22Ponce+de+leon+hotel%22%5E10%29&query=%22Ponce+de+leon+hotel%22. http://www.floridamemory.com/blog/2015/01/21/the-shocking-ponce-de-leon-hotel/ deisenbe (talk) 09:37, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The name is pronounced in English (/ˈpɒns də ˈliən/); the accent was not used when the building was a hotel ("the Ponce") and it is not used now by Flagler College which operates the structure as Ponce de Leon Hall.[1] (The college does use the accent on the name of the man.[2]) —  AjaxSmack  02:09, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The name of this building is rarely written with the accent. See, for example,[3][4][5][6][7][8] The 19th-century American building isn't closely related to the 16th-century Spaniard it's named after.--Cúchullain t/c 14:54, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Easy support - There is no reason to presume that an accent should be there. We are not supposed to decide what the hotel's name is - we let the hotel do that! Red Slash 03:55, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
