no mention of Paulo Freire?[edit]

Any article about popular education must discuss the work of Freire in detail. He is the most important figure in the history popular education. Though the roots of popular education extend back to the French revolution and beyond, it was Freire who developed and articulated the educational practices and philosophy generally referred to as popular education today. This article does not at all reflect the commonly understood definition or history of popular education and would need to be totally rewritten to achieve higher standards of quality. I'm a sdtudent in Indonesia I'sorry,cause my English not too well I'intrested with discources about education. I think education is sharpen knife, so it is a need every people I try critic about concept of offers by Paulo freire I think in his concept There isn't religion approach. education appeared not only social and culture approach but also religion approach. Merge Folk high school here[edit]

I propose to merge folk high school here. Although the latter article is much more complete, it is restricted, by its names, to "high school", thus leaving out "popular universities" (although it does mention them and include them), as well as others types of workshops. Popular education is a vast field, with many different aspects. I thought about merging this stub to "folk high school," but I think it would be wrong, as this title is more adequate (and has links to foreign Wikis with the same title, such as pt:Educação popular from which this stub appears to be translated from). Another solution would be to move all relevant content of "folk high school" here, extend this article, and make of "folk high school" article a sub-article of this one (see Template:SubArticle). Against merging...[edit]

I'm not sure it's a good idea to merge these articles. I would rather keep both and make the relevant links... Folk high schools is a very special phenomenon in it's own right, and they deserve their own article in the encyclopedia, I think.

Against Merging[edit]

In many countries, the consept of folk high school us something completely in its own right, and has nothing to do with the political consept of many of the subclasses of popular education. It deserves its one article, on the point that the term "folk high school" is something quite well known in northern Europe and on account of their popularity in these parts (specially in Scandinavia). I agree that the popular education article is very politically coloured at the moment, but i think that it almost could be renamed to political education and have a complete remake of popular education. I would vote for a category of popular education, with linked subclasses in there, or have popular education as a summary of the different variations, linking to the different original articles. 2bias 13:30, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Using French-language sources?[edit]

First off, I'm new to Wikipedia, so bear with me -.- . On the REPAS website is a list of all the REPAS network meetings since 1994 and their hosts, and it includes a meeting hosted by the Lycée autogéré de Paris in 2005, which demonstrates the association which the LAP has had with REPAS since 2005. However, the website is in French and there seems to be precious little English-language information on REPAS or its connections. Scope[edit]

This article is a hodge-podge of examples vaguely related to the intersection of adult education and social transformation. It would suffice, based on the extant sources, to merge to a section within adult education and only split back out summary style when warranted by a preponderance of source material. Otherwise it doesn't matter if some distinguish "adult" from "popular" education if there is no united body of sources on the latter that could be used to write an encyclopedia article. If covered in the larger adult education article, at least readers would can understand the variant in context with some sourced historical examples.
