The Name Possum Grape[edit]

The community was actually named the Possum grapes which grow wild in the area. Possum grapes are similar to muscadines, or wild plums and are commonly made into jellies and wines.

Some research on the name[edit]

I tried tracking down the origin of the name, and ran into an amusing set of possibilities (73.119.23.49 (talk) 03:21, 30 January 2020 (UTC)):[reply]

  • Blog post which claims the name comes from the fruit of the same name, along with some discussion about it in the comments that references the claim from this wiki page that it was a disagreement about Possum vs. Grape (which the blog author disputes as likely made up for comedy). The author of the section above agrees.
  • Blog which claims the Possum vs. Grape disagreement theory (possibly sourced from the wiki page)
  • AP article, which posits that the town is "apparently named for local critters that would nibble the fruit of the vine".

Given the apparent lack of agreement or definitive sources, I removed the Possum vs. Grape story from the page.
