WikiProject Wine Rating[edit]

This article is well written and provides foundations for a valuable contribution, but still in need of more development, hence the rating of "class c". I encourage further development by adding sections on the origins and benefits of precision viticulture, review of the extensive literature about the subject, relevant photos and illustration of precision viticulture management practices and high technology tools, discussion of benefits and controversy, summary of case studies, and expansion of external links and further reading.

This article is "high priority" because of the importance of precision viticulture for production of fine wines and better management of vineyards. I encourage others to help communicate the many exciting recent developments in precision viticulture.

Eh, in the grand scheme of the world of wine, I think a "high" importance rating is a little too high. I can see it being a little more than low. How about a "mid" importance as a compromise? AgneCheese/Wine 04:02, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A "high" importance rating is warranted, assuming the WikiProject Wine Group considers wine production as an important part of its scope. Precision viticulture is at a similar categorical level as the topic "terroir" (rated "high" importance), has a extensive literature, and has strong contemporary interest among viticulturalists and wineries. Of course production is important but for the importance ratings to be of any use to the project they need to take into account scale and scope. Viticulture is listed as "high" importance and that is the "mother article" so to speak of this article. Precision viticulture is a subset of the main viticulture article and in the grand scheme of things is a step lower in priority. Hence a "mid-importance" rating is warranted. Or perhaps Viticulture should be elevated to "top" importance. It seems to me that the "top" importance articles should be Wine, Oenology/Winemaking, Viticulture, Vitis vinifera, and Wine tasting. By the same reasoning, the major varietals and regions might be moved from "top" to "high" importance, and many of the "high" importance topics might be moved to "mid" or "low" importance. Perhaps but we have an establish committee process at WP:WINE for determining top importance articles and if viticulture is meant to attain that ranking it will be in due time. Precision viticulture has a very narrow scope in a commercial sector of vineyard management. Taking in the scope of history, the amount of literature and discussion on PV pales in comparison to a topic like terroir which should be rated higher than PV. Again, as an active contributor to WP:WINE who has worked with rating a sizable percentage of the project's articles, I do feel that a "mid importance" rating fits the scope and scale of PV to this project and its attempts to document the world of wine. This seems more like a mid-importance subject to me, not high. While an interesting relatively new development, it's a rather technical subject, and practiced far from everywhere (as far as I know). As the WP:WINE project not only is a viticulture subject but also encompasses wine geography, wine classification systems, wine appreciation, history of wine, and so on, the subject of this article is specialised and technical to the general reader, rather than one of the articles you definitely would read to get an overview of the subject of wine in general, in my opinion. I agree this seems to fall under the description of "mid", as an article of quite specific scope within its field and of much less resonance among the wide readership, like other mid-classeds such as Biodynamic wine, Microoxygenation, Brettanomyces, etc.. I would be satisfied with a "high" or "mid" importance level at this stage. However, I encourage other members of the Wikiproject Wine to cover more topics like this. We are rather heavy in what would be a wine guide and do not have enough encyclopedic information on science, technology, and other contemporary issues.
