Removed from the article[edit]

The town has also spawned a long list of rich and famous socialites, namely Gareth Riseborough, a wealthy Rhodesian businessman who can draw his geneology back to the original surveyor of this plot of land.

There are two main problems with this: Risborough isn't named after someone called Risborough or Riseborough as is plainly explained in the article, and if someone's surname does come from this area it's likely to be the other way around: the surname came from the place. Please provide references including whom this individual is before including it in the article again. -- Fr a ncs2000 19:20, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the Article[edit]

I have deleted some facts which are untrue and some of which conflict with the article on Monks Risborough. I have queried others which I did not know and may be true, but full supporting references are needed. There is a separate article on the Manor House which I should have thought would be better as a separate section in this article; people searching for the Manor House can be re-directed here. It includes an old quotation on the history of the manor which has nothing to do with the manor house and should probably be moved here in any event, but i will wait to see if there are any comments first. Markets and Fairs[edit]

This section previously read as follows: "The market in the town was granted by King Henry III, so was the privilege of the townsmen to be excused from attending quarterly assizes."

This quotes no references and is not confirmed by any of the books which I have seen. If anybody does have references for it, plese re-instate it with the references.

It would also be usefu to have an authoritative note of the present position.

Manor House[edit]

I have included a new section on the Manor House divided into two parts, dealing with the medieval manor house and the house now called the Manor House, though it has been Brook House for most of its existence.

I am aware that there is a separate article on Princes Risborough Manor House but it quotes no sources and some of it is of doubtful accuracy.

I do not think it is of sufficient importance for a separate article and I think it belongs here. The former separate article on the Manor House has now been merged with this article. It re-directs to the section on the present Manor House. Some further editing of this section is in preparation.

Chalk hillside carving[edit]

I can't believe nobody mentioned the very noticeable cross carved in the chalky hillside overlooking Princes Risborough. I'll add a brief mention but I don't know anything about it except from seeing it from the air and on aerial maps. 80.229.205.129 (talk) 19:35, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As you will see, I have amended your reference to Whiteleaf Cross in the lead to the article and have deleted the brief reference which was already in a later section. There is a separate article on the cross and it is also mentioned in the article on Monks Risborough, but it is certainly promninent above Princes Risborough and I see no harm in mentioning it here also.

I find it odd that the feature that Princes Risborough is most famous for is completely absent here?

The bit on the Manor House looks to be out of place here, as 1) it takes up a disproportional amount of space, 2) it is not really all that closely connected with the history of the town and 3) it is not really all that noticeable in the town? - Risborough (talk) 06:04, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notable people[edit]

None of the entries for "notable people" have any sources cited, and, apart from Edward Stone, who was born in Risborough, I can't find any evidence that any of them ever lived there. Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, for example, lives in Horsenden Manor, which is in Longwick-cum-Ilmer parish - yes it's near Risborough, but clutching at straws really. Going through one-by-one:

Sarah Harding lived in Cadsden until October 2017 (I've added a source to the article), which the article says is in the Risborough ecclesiastical parish.
I've added a Telegraph article as a source which says that McQueen is "from Princes Risborough".
Horsenden Manor is less than half a mile from Risborough (eyeballing it on Google maps), so I don't think it's a stretch to have Jay Kay listed here.
In this interview with the Telegraph, Nicholas Parsons (RIP) mentions his "house in Princes Risborough", so even if the house is technically in Ilmer I reckon it should count.

I can't find any guidelines in the MOS for when someone can be considered to "live in" a place. Living within a mile or two of the town seems reasonable to me, but I'm open to discussion if you think the criteria should be more strict. Bensculfor (talk) 11:06, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
