I've rated this article as Top importance, as El Priorat, along with Rioja, is one of the only two existing Spanish DOCs (or DOQ in Catalan). (There are about 66 'normal' DO's in Spain). --BodegasAmbite 11:33, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved it down to High. Top is a really exclusive category - even quite major countries such as Argentine wine and Portuguese wine aren't Top articles. Also, you can't just decide something is a Top importance - it has to be voted there (on the Wine Project homepage) by 5 members of the project. To be honest there's a good case for moving it to Mid, if you look at the notability of some of the other regions with Mid ratings, there's no shame in being a Mid. Despite the distinction of being a DOQ, I'd guess that most ordinary Wikipedians won't have heard of it nor will see it in their local shops, which counts for quite a lot when assessing notability. Deleted text in Intro[edit]

I deleted this sentence from the introductory paragraph:

However, while Priorat's DOCa status was granted by the Catalan autonomous regional government several years ago, national approval from Madrid is still pending, and Priorat is therefore listed as a regular Denominación de Origen (DO) in national-level sources.

This is because by law 'national approval from Madrid' is not necessary. DOs in Spain are managed at a regional level (like health and eduction, for example).

The regional legislation for DOs is sent to Madrid for publication in the BOE, for the purpose of protection of the DO's tradmark and interests internationally and nationally (outside the region). Sometimes this legislation is published years later and can result in out-of-date lists from the MAPA (Spanish Ministry of Agriculture), which for example does not yet list the DOs of La Gomera and Gran Canaria.
