Air Force confirms rocket explosion caused uncontrolled spin[edit]

"A cloud of space debris identified by the US airforce indicates some component of the vessel or its Soyuz carrier rocket exploded at the point of separation, damaging navigation equipment and knocking the craft off its intended orbit." --roger (talk) 17:11, 30 April 2015 (UTC) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/space/11574043/Rocket-explosion-sent-Russian-spacecraft-into-tailspin.html[reply]

Use of "launch failure" template in the article[edit]

I have doubts as to the use of the Template:Launching in failure mode here in the article. While circumstances known seems to be suggestive as to that there might be a problem with the Soyuz-2 rocket 3rd stage in the final seconds of flight, this is yet to be proven (after all, an explosion from Progress itself could have done the same thing without involving the rocket), and while some kind of info box regarding this as LOM is probably useful, I think Template:Launching should not be used since this is WP:CRYSTALBALL pointing to the launch itself as a failure.

I think I'm going to comment it out for the time being since I don't see any controversies with this; it can be put back out in the open when the official investigation can pinpoint the cause down (although by then the template would probably point to the next launch already so maybe it should not have been used at all).

Ideally, there'd be a template for mission failure of some sort (Loss of Vehicle/Loss of Mission) and that would be backed up fairly reliably. My interpretation is that Progress M-27M could have been connected to the failure, and there are multiple sources saying it was either 3rd stage or Progress's issue. Because of that controversial nature of the failure, details would change in the article quite often until a full failure report is published.
Progress M-27M may or may not have been involved with this failure. However, I think the main purpose of the Template:Launching in failure mode is to let readers know that a story is still developing and new details from current investigations may lead to rapid changes in the content. Progress M-27M may have had an anomaly and some sources say that it might, so details would change rapidly. Therefore it would make sense to include the template. Cat for a failure[edit]

Do we have a category for spacecraft launch failures? --ᛒᚨᛊᛖ (ᛏᚨᛚᚲ) 10:46, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
