Purmerend[edit]

Because I am going to Amsterdam in July 2012 I decided to look up a few of the places that I visited in 1997. I was so pleased that I had stayed for several nights in Purmerend and visited the Cattle Markets on Tuesday o f that week when I saw that these markets have since been relocated. I feel priveleged that I was part of it all back then. It was an incredible experience seeing all the livestock being sold in the town square early that morning, in July 1997. We were entranced by the dealings between the owners, agents and buyers in the coffee shops. We were amazed at the sight of some very huge beasts tied up in the square, the sounds and the smells that went along with it all. Very timidly we came back late that evening for our dinner booking at one of the restaurants in the square, thinking the worst re smells, etc. It was absolutely amazing! Gone were all the smells, the pavers and roads had been hosed and scrubbed to a state that left many of our home streets lacking.

So next year, in 2013, when I return to Amsterdam I will make a bus trip to Purmerend to have lunch, walk to the Hotel we stayed in and soak up the atmosphere of that lovely village.

When we went to a Seafood Restaurant in Amsterdam on another evening our food waiter was a young woman from Permerend. When she learnt that we were staying for five days in Purmerend we were treated like royalty. the same happened with the staff at the Hotel in Purmerend. We were so glad that we stayed there rather than in the city.
