Urban varieties[edit]

Most of this article deals with the urban varieties (白話), but there is reason to doubt that they belong to the Qin-Lian subgroup of Yue. The article notes that they lack the defining characteristic of Qin-Lian, namely aspirates for MC voiced stops and affricates in all tones. According to de Sousa (p162, footnote 6), they are very close to Standard Cantonese, which would place them in the Guangfu subgroup, whereas the Lianzhou dialect is mutually unintelligible with Cantonese. The article on "Cantonese" (i.e. Yue) in the Routledge Encyclopedia of the Chinese Language p. 23 defines Qin-Lian as the language of "the traditional areas of Qinzhou and Lianzhou (modern-day Hepu)".
