How is frequency measured?[edit]

Major Edit[edit]

This article is currently just a little stub. I use these oscillators on a daily basis and have written a short, referenced document on the background and use of the balances and if no one objects I would like to replace this stub with that document; properly edited and formatted for wikipedia of course. I will look into any copyright issues on images and statistics contained within before I post up the document for you guys to check out. This might take a few weeks. I'll look at it in more detail later when I have more time. For now, I've made a minor edit to it, and I'll give you a few quick reactions to it. The name of the thing being written about should be worked into the first or second sentence of a Wikipedia article. Some of the introductory material about piezoelectricity can be left to the piezoelectricity article. Also, notice that there is already a small article about the Sauerbrey equation. Your essay contains good material on how QCMs are used and on AT -cut and SC crystals. Adding material on the z-match method is also a good idea. I haven't added figures yet myself, but around here people are very concerned that figures not have any copyright issues. Cardamon 22:46, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks for the info... this is my first real contribution here so I'm not completely familiar with policy. I made some changes to the article, removing the discussion on piezoelectricity and leaving the link to the article on that topic. I modified the existing introductory paragraph for the QCM and incorporated it into my article I had a look at the sauerbrey equation article and its pretty slim. I would recommend merging what I have regarding the sauerbrey equation and z-match method into the sauerbrey equation article. Nano Dan 17:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reference issues[edit]

I recently brought the references to modern standards by taking full advantage of our cite template framework and expanding abbreviations, names and other information, and providing links where possible. There are four remaining issues:

  • Several journal references state only the start page of an article instead of the page span (or the specific page supporting the statement).
  • Two journal references still miss both, the issue number and the title of the corresponding articles. Unfortunately, they do not appear to be available online to look up easily.
  • In two references of apparently Russian origin the names of the authors could not be expanded. Does someone know the first names or the Cyrillic equivalents of V. V. Borovikov, R. A. Dialnyan, I. M. Shmyt’ko, or A. P. Borovikov?
  • The "Ballato, Arthur; Lukaszek, Theodore J.; Eernisse, Errol P. (1979). IEEE Transactions on Sonics and Ultrasonics. 26: 163-" reference is affected by two of the above problems (missing title and issue number, as well as incomplete page info), but might be mixed up in other ways as well as it could not be found in online repositories so far. There is an article by Ballato in the 1979 26 volume, but apparently not one authored by all three authors. Assuming a typo, all three authors did write an article in the 1978 25 volume, but the page numbers differ as well.

Erroneous formula?[edit]

The "Viscoelastic film in liquid" section features a formula (the 2nd one) which cannot be right. The units are off (missing a "Hz" on the RHS) and it is said to be "equivalent to the Sauerbrey equation" if you ignore the bracketed term, but it simply isn't. The first formula is cited, but neither source contains the formula exactly (the second reference contains a formula which looks like it may be a rewritten form).
