Proposal to move "Arnines" to "R1-9s"[edit]

"Arnines" seems to be a term coined by railfans to describe the R1-9 fleet. It was never used by NYCT or the preceding BOT. Submitting a proposal to move the article to a page called "R1-9s." Mtattrain (talk) 19:41, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Seconding this. "Arnines" is a term that originated on the SubTalk message board in the early 2000s. NYCT/BOT have never referred to these cars by that term, both internally and in public-facing messaging.

Internally, they have always been referred to as R1-9s, or "R9" in reference to the entire R1 to R9 fleet.

It is certainly reasonable to mention the "Arnines" enthusiast nickname in the article, but It should be made clear that this is a nickname coined by enthusiasts and the cars are not to be officially referred to by that term. DjHammers (talk) 19:46, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the term "Arnines" doesn't actually seem to appear anywhere in reliable sources. Not in ProQuest's database, not in newspapers.com, and not even on the web. It's incredibly unlikely to show up in any book - there are few to no results for that term going back to 1830, which probably indicates that this is used in some other context that has nothing to do with the NYC Subway. As such, I would support a move.

One thing though, the final title would probably be "R1–9s" or "R1–9 fleet" (with an n-dash), since we're talking about a range of contracts, not a single contract called 1-9. – Epicgenius (talk) 23:49, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The move has been completed, as we are all in support of this. I chose the second of your proposed renames. If you think this could be renamed again in the future, we can do that, but I'm not sure if we need the (New York City Subway car) part of the title, especially if we were to do the first name instead.
