Article name[edit]

This page is incorrectly named. It should be RNAS Rattray or HMS Merganser. Not RNAS Merganser. I will create a new page called HMS Merganser and once that is done I will amend this to a REDIRECT page to that new page Brownag (talk) 11:57, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your change as you did it by cutting and pasting, which does not preserve the history of who edited the article, which we need for copyright attribution purposes. If the page is to be moved to HMS Merganser this must be done using a conventional WP page move, which will preserve the editing history. --Deskford (talk) 13:31, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: No consensus. The last comment doesn't agree with the requested move, but also looks like a format we don't normally use, namely Old name (new name) as disambiguator. RNAS Merganser → HMS Merganser – A user previously made this move as a cut-and-paste operation, which I reverted as it did not preserve the article history (see above), though it would appear that the change, if done properly, would be appropriate. How much was it called RNAS (= Royal Navy Air Station, which it was), and how much HMS (as the place is an airfield on land and not a ship)? Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:41, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding of Brownag's comment in the section above is that it was known as "RNAS Rattray" or "HMS Merganser", but not a combination of the two. List of air stations of the Royal Navy states that "RNAS" always prefixes a geographical name, whilst a commissioned air base could be given a name prefixed "HMS" as if it were a ship. I'm no expert though – I'm hoping someone will come along who knows something about this! --Deskford (talk) 21:07, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment - I will hist merge this now, to reunite changes before and after the copy/paste move. I'm and leaving the merged article at RNAS Merganser for now, as that's the "current name" listed in the move above, but I think the long term stable title since 2009 is actually HMS Merganser, in the event of a no consensus.. Rename to RNAS Rattray (HMS Merganser) - Sometime before September 1942 the base was called "RNAS Crimond" after the local village but changed to "RNAS Rattray" after a local headland. HMS Merganser → RNAS Rattray (HMS Merganser) – Sometime before September 1942 the base was called "RNAS Crimond" after the local village but changed to "RNAS Rattray" after a local headland. It was commissioned as "HMS Merganser" on 3 October 1944)^[1]. Sturtivant and Ballance's book "The Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm" call it Rattray.^[2] So it should be "RNAS Rattray (HMS Merganser)". The name format is common with RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron) (an active base) and RNAS Lee-on-Solent (HMS Daedalus) and RNAS Crail (HMS Jackdaw) (both former bases) Gavbadger (talk) 21:10, 31 May 2016 (UTC) -- Relisting. Oppose This double naming title approach is deprecated on Wikipedia. If a handful of other bases uses this format then there is a serious case for moving them. PatGallacher (talk)
