In 1854, the stores were established by Joseph George Raphael and Dr Frederick Mackellar (father of long-term parliamentarian Sir Charles Mackellar and grandfather of poet Dorothea Mackellar). However, the primary source for the nomenclature refers consistently to the building as the Raphael Mackeller Stores, and not the Raphael Mackellar Stores.
