Officially rare?[edit]

I've been hunting for an official definition of rare species from an authoritative body, but the only one I've come across is the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950 of Western Australia which uses the term "Rare or endangered species" and "declared rare" officially. The article uses the IUCN as example of an "official body", but the IUCN only seems to use the term "rare" in an unofficial or descriptive context. Can anyone give another example of an official "rare" status? —Pengo 22:41, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Representation of variety of species.[edit]

It seems to me that species found in California are wildly over-represented on this page. Also why is it that Geochelone nigro abingdoni (Pinta Island Tortoise) is not even mentioned on this page? There is also a rare beast from the mountains of Brutan. Its name is Cuddo. It meows like a sick dog.

Examples / link to lists[edit]

There was a list of example rare species, but it disappeared (in an edit 20:22, 4 March 2011‎ by 109.76.178.133 that appears to be nothing more than vandalism that never was undone?)

If lists aren't coming back, then this page needs relevant links - many visitors come here expecting to learn what animals and plants are rare. Not merely an academic definition of what "rare" means... CapnZapp (talk) 22:02, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could the rare species just not be found?[edit]

I've been wondering if the list of rare species could be substantionally shortened if those rare species were found. Is it possible that their range is so narrow it is in a place that ecologists don not look? I know rare plant species have been thought extinct for many years and then refound later on. Since a species cannot die and then come back, is it possible that researchers are just not looking in the right places? I suggest that rare plants and fungi are added to the article. A few species should be added to the table with links to each. I would also add that there is a difference between rare and endangered/threatened species.Ad886512 (talk) 13:02, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
