Reading centennial souvenir[edit]

@Cdnkidz: This is just a note that some of the historical accounts of Reading's early settlers make some dubious claims. For example, in the city's centennial souvenir book, Mayor Gertz claims that Harvey Redinbo was the son-in-law of William Penn, and that Penn was born in Reading, England. The Enquirer repeats this claim, as do some city websites. [1][2] However, Penn was actually born in a different place near London. Moreover, Ford (1881) states that Redinbo and his wife Margaret settled in Voorheestown and both died in 1828 or 1829, yet Penn's daughter Margaret married a Thomas Freame and died 80 years earlier. So the mayor's account was clearly embellished and should be taken with a grain of salt, ideally corroborated by another source. – Minh Nguyễn ^💬 22:39, 16 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
