Muslim population

IP editor 203.218.134.134 put the following comment in the article itself, which I've moved here to the Talk page:

  • Note: There is a discrepancy in the number of muslims in hong kong. The main article "Islam in Hong Kong" states that there are 20,000 muslims in Hong Kong. However, above it states that there are 80,000 muslims in Hong Kong. Request someone knowledgeable to comment / correct.

Muslim population composition

I have removed from the page the sentence that said the majority of Muslims in Hong Kong are Ethnic Chinese. There is simply no source or reference for that. The official Hong Kong Demographic Data by Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department (http://www.censtatd.gov.hk/home/index.jsp) do not include religious data. The raw number of Muslims seems to come from CIA World Fact Book which do not tell the ethnic composition of Muslims. The overwhelming majority of Muslims in Hong Kong are simply resident population from Indonesia and Pakistan. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.246.111.47 (talk) 03:38, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Atheism

I can't find a single mention of atheism in this entire article, does anyone else find that a little odd? --Tmckeage (talk) 05:23, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

No it is not odd. It's the standard thing of assuming your cultural defect is a universal property. The current text of this article is a classic for, "everybody has some god, some religion", even though at some level of intellectual attainment, it's known that Chinese culture is and has been irreligious, atheistic at least among the literate classes for millenia, then subsequently the whole culture as it began to successfully deal with the class struggle and throw off feudalism. It would be a waste of time to try to address it (the obvious POV/lie in the article), but it shouldn't go without acknowledgment of what it is.
Except for attributing superstition to what is in fact one of and in some studies the most superior intellectually populations on the planet, the pie chart is probably accurate, it's just where we are on this thing in 2017/4715 that this can stand at all, probably will eventually be addressed.98.4.124.117 (talk) 17:03, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

Jevovah's Witnesses?

The first paragraph contains text copied directly from http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/irf/2008/108404.htm#hong_kong. That page includes all the numbers in the article, except it also states there are 4,600 Jehovah's Witnesses. Why not include this fact in the article?

For reference, the linked page says: "Approximately 43 percent of the population practices some form of religion. The two most prevalent religions are Buddhism and Taoism, which are often observed together in the same temple. The region is home to approximately 700,000 Buddhists and Taoists, 320,000 Protestant Christians, 243,000 Roman Catholics, 90,000 Muslims, 40,000 Hindus, 8,000 Sikhs, 4,600 Jehovah's Witnesses, and 4,000 practicing Jews. Confucianism is also prevalent in the HKSAR. State Religion?

I'm curious - was the Church of England the established church in Hong Kong pre-1997 as it is in the UK? What happened afterwards?FOARP (talk) 10:18, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Traditional religions including Chinese Buddhism were discouraged under British rule, which officially represented Christianity.[13] The handover of sovereignty from Britain to China has led to a resurgence of Buddhist and Chinese religions.[13]

are these propaganda or opinions, doesn't seem weighted with much evidence?

"Chinese folk religion, Buddhism, Taoism, Irreligion, or Atheism (82.8%)". Why are these all categorised together?
