IIRC, Tang recieved a presidential unit citation and set the all time record for the most lifeguard pickups during the war — 16--18 the same patrol, in the Marshals, IIRC.

• The location of the sinking may be in error, it may have been in the Yellow Sea or BoHai Gulf but it's certainly more appropo than 'Off China'. O'Kane and Tangs crew had been itching to get into the inner ring of Japans defenses for some time according to his book. Vice Admiral Charles Lockwood, COMSUBPAC under Nimtiz, had prohibited such patrols for a lengthy period, but relented when sufficient forces were available to re-enter the area, one unpatroled since Wahoo's loss, IIRC, according to O'Kanes book. He had theorized for months that Wahoo had been lost passing the Bonins (IIRC) in a subsurface mine field, so he took Tang in through the narrows on the surface.

• I didn't Recall correctly, but the publishers splash from the Random House paperback version gives both the book title and the correct count, while also making me pretty sure they did recieve the Presidential Unit Citation. • Yes, there was a PUC involved. Holding the book in my hand, the count reads 22 airmen rescued. There is some interesting anecdotal evidence given in the book to the effect that the senior Navy man embarked was a bit of a stuffed shirt, and O'Kane and an Ensign Dowdle contrived to maintain the Navy tradition of keeping him in the dark. Commander A.R. Matter had asked that all rescued airmen be returned to their parent air groups ASAP, but when Dowdle transmitted the message to PACFLT, the antenna trunk apparently came loose from its moorings, and so the request never saw the light of day...Foamking (talk) 04:21, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Navy Tradition About O'Kane's Cribbage Board

The article on cribbage states that "cribbage holds a special place among American submariners, serving as an 'official' pastime. The wardroom of the oldest submarine in the fleet carries RADM Dick O'Kane's personal cribbage board onboard, and upon decommissioning it is transferred to the next oldest boat." It appears to be properly sourced, from a Navy news article. Opinions on whether this deserves mention in this article as well? - Mark Dixon (talk) 05:45, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Recent book, would it be worth adding in references section?

I just saw this recent book at the library, seems like a logical continuation of RADM O'Kane's own two books, with more emphasis on the prisoner of war experiences of Tang's surviving crew.

Would RADM O'Kane approve of adding it to the reference section?

Read the article, then read the Medal of Honor article. From there, read any associated/linked articles. You should gain a better understanding of the MoH criteria, as well as other awards crews may be eligible for, and at some point, you should have an answer for your question.
