Talk:Richard Thompson discography

I would like to put forward some ideas about the Thompson discography for discussion. It seems to me that there is a case for merging the "Richard Thompson" and "Richard and Linda Thompson" discographies. From a point of view of tracing the career and development of Richard Thompson it makes more sense to have a sequence that runs from "Henry..." in 1972, then on to "Bright Lights" in 1974 through to "Shoot Out The Lights" in 1982 and then continues with "Hand Of Kindness" in 1983.

This seems to make more sense than a "Richard Thomspon discography" that starts with "Henry" in 1972 and then has nothing until "Strict tempo" (which was really a side project) in 1981 and then "Hand Of Kindness" as the next "proper" album. In the meantime Thompson's career, life and art had developed and that development is reflected in the Richard and Linda albums.

Good point. Have a look at the Rush Discography & see how we squared the circle there. What we could do is put all of the albums in chronological order with an extra column for "artist" and colour code the rows for studio/live/compilations. That way we have a full "arc" of everything Richard's done in chronological order. How does that sound? Megamanic 02:14, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

It's not what I had in mind really. I was thinking of the actual album pages and the info boxes therein. To me it seems that the "next" album from "Henry The Human Fly" should be "Bright Lights". The sequence would then carry on through to "Shoot Out The Lights" and then carry on to "Hand Of Kindness".

But that's perhaps looking at it from a Richard Thompson-centric view. Those albums would just as much form as part of a Linda Thompson discography. I'm not sure that it's for wikipedia to present these albums as part of Richard Thompson's artistic development, so probably best to leave it as is.

Discography

Thompson's discography is extensive. Currently it's being itemised both in the main Richard Thomposon (musician) page as well as in the stand-alone discography. IMO one of these should go!

IMO the stand-alone discography should prevail, with perhaps a simple listing of Thompson's commercial releases UNDER HIS OWN NAME on the main page.

The stand-alone would also benefit from some brief notes as in the David Bowie discography, explaining the various phases of his career and providing some context to the breakdown of albums.

An interesting question is the categorisation of the "Dream Attic" album. This is a live album entirely comprising reviously unreleased material. There are precedents for this. Those would be Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty" and Joe Jackson's "Big World". Those seem to be categorised as studio albums. They're not really, but they're also not the more usual kind of live album which usually consists mosly of previously released material.

Thoughts please. This is a good time to review the RT discography as he has just released a new album and it will probably be a while before there's another addition to the discography.

My proposal is 1) ONE discography, that being this stand-alone discography 2) A reduced list on the main page of "Richard Thompson" and "Richard and Linda Thompson" albums, released for retail and excluding compilations, on the main RT page. No tables of details - just a simple list with links. 3) Tidy up the discography. It LOOKS long and a little untidy IMO. I would bring it closer in design to the Jackson Browne or David Bowie discographies. 4) A couple of explanatory paragraphs at the top of the discography. This would also serve as a definition of WHAT should be included in the RT discography.

I will post this message under the talk section of the main RT page.

No entries in chart columns

Is it useful to have empty columns for chart positions in some tables, if only to show that a song did not chart? Conversely, for those tables that have very few chart entries, would these be better covered in the text? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:07, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Chiming in to agree with the above. Also, while recorded live, Dream Attic is an album of all new music, citing it as a live album is misleading, albeit unintentionally. It was recorded on tour using a Black Box digital recorder, essentially replacing the recording studio with the rock clubs played on the tour. If RT had been a bigger draw, playing big halls and arenas, there would have been substantially less bleed on the mics and the album would sound much more like a studio album.

Came here to say exactly this, and find that nothing has been done about this for almost a year. If no-one objects, I will add them.
