Updating History Map[edit]

I would like to replace the graphic showing the historic boundaries of Richfield with one that I created that is more accurate and more detailed. I produced this graphic for a book on Richfield history by the Richfield Historical Society (I am a board member). Is there interest? --Myotus 19:52, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice map, though I would like to point out that the fact Bloomington is not noted on the map amuses me to great extent as their population is three times larger and could likely have annexed Richfield before the laws were changed. .:DavuMaya:. 06:02, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bloomington's population was generally smaller than Richfield's until the 1960's when it developed into a suburb. Because Bloomington was not part of of Richfield Township it was not included on the map, however there always has been a close relationship between South Richfield and North Bloomington. The "town" of Bloomfield could be found on several early maps on what is now the area between Lyndale and Nicollet Avenues at 78th Street (now I-494).Myotus (talk) 21:31, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Legion Lake[edit]

There was a story in the 1960/70's claiming Legion Lake was actually a lake, rather than a fen, before construction of the freeway on the North end of town somehow "broke" the water table. Actually Leagion Lake's name was changed from not-so-sexy name of Mud Lake, which probably referred to its exsisting shallow condition and at times going dry. However, both Wood Lake and Mother Lake were decimated by the Freeway construction. I don't think the freeway helped Legion Lake much either.

Notables[edit]

Charles Schulz of Peanuts fame was also a resident and unlike St. Paul, he actually did some of his strip while living in Richfield. His former house in Richfield still has a mural he did in it. However, this is likely to get challenged so I will be digging up references for this before posting on the article page.

Jobs[edit]

I can't find statistics, but Richfield is home to the headquarters of Best Buy and is adjacent to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which I suspect are the biggest local employers.--Appraiser (talk) 20:10, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't necessarily say a lot of Richfield residents now work at Best Buy, everyone still primarily works in Minneapolis or elsewhere (Bloomington, West suburbs). Richfield has some small retail and commercial intersections but the only major corporate and business campuses are along the I-494 strip (Meridian Crossings, etc) .:davumaya:. 19:24, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Population:approximately 37,000. Employment:19,000. Employers:Best Buy=5200, GMAC=1083, Richfield Public Schools=633, Metro Sales=264, City of Richfield=235. This says to me that most residents are leaving the city to find work.[1]--Appraiser (talk) 17:25, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

State Historic Site?[edit]

The Riley Lucas Bartholomew House does not show up on this list. Is the text inaccurate where it says, "the Riley Lucas Bartholomew House is listed on the National and Minnesota Registers of Historic Places."?--Appraiser (talk) 14:03, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No because that is a list of historic sites are maintained and operated by the Minnesota Historical Society.
Here is the NRHP listing at the Minnesota Historical Society of the Riley Lucas Bartholomew House.

The state system is one of helping certified local governments to oversee NRHP designation and to assist in the set up local heritage preservation commissions which in turn could nominate and designate their own local properties. Minneapolis and St. Paul have heritage preservation commissions which do just that, but Richfield has no such commission so the Bartholomew House could not have a local designation let alone a state designation.
I was assuming the text meant National National Registers of Historic Places in Minnesota but I see I did not read it carefully enough. If that is what is meant it certainly is confusing and should be rewrote or simply removed.

Further clarification, after talking with the Minnesota Historical Society's SHPO office there is a State Register of Historic Places. However, it is not managed by the Minnesota Historical Society nor does it look like the Bartholomew house is listed on it.

Too much Target roof information[edit]

"The SuperTarget has the Target bullseye painted on its roof, which can be seen from planes taking off from the airport. Target stores near Chicago O'Hare International Airport [7] and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport also have bullseyes on their roof."
What is the importance of this information to the Richfield Article?

Richfield Intermediate School[edit]

Co-ordinate change[edit]

True, I'm not from round here (as they say) but I think that the co-ordinates were a little off. The previous set seemed to give a location that (in Google Maps at least) was a little north of the city boundary. (See, for example, this PDF city map which shows that Highway 62 seems to be the northern edge; the previous marker was N of this highway.) I have changed them to something more central, using City Hall as the target. I hope that this was a sensible change which works for you too - if not, please yell and help me to sort it out! Bicycling in Richfield[edit]

John from Idegon, primary sources are fine in many cases, especially for facts. The Star-Tribune article is a secondary source. Myotus, the paragraph on the reasons for the award is too much detail as well as being a too close paraphrase of the city web page. It doesn't belong here. Find a source that describes the major bike trails that pass through the city. The material in the last sentence isn't in either of the references.
