River source[edit]

I need to verify this but I'm about 99% sure that the River that runs from Pingot Quarry to the corner of George Street Playing Fields is not River Beal. The River Beal runs from (I believe) a source beyond the Beal Valley (which is the huge mass of empty land behind the Derker estate). It then runs towards Shaw and leads under a bridge around the entrance to Fulfilment Logistics, under Beal Lane and then through a tunnel leading under Littlewoods NDC's Beal Lane Gatehouse and out around the perimeter of Littlewoods trailer yard, through more tunnels, past the back of Lily 2 Mill, through another tunnel under a building and another trailer yard and out again to run straight between Newby Mill and it's adjoining warehouse. It then travels through buildings and either past or under (not sure) the new estate and then emerges in George Street playing fields. Under the footbridge and finally at this point it meets the river from Pingot Quarry and carries on towards Dunwood park and on to Jubilee, Newhey etc... I'll find out what the river described is actually called, but I don't believe it should be included in this article ~~ Pete 01:05, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the river has multiple sources all from the same watershed. I know that there is Beal lane in the Shaw and Crompton area, which runs over the river. I understood that the tributary river from Pingot Quarry was, or at least joined the River Beal.
From recollection, the river may have its source from the hillside area between Shaw and Derker - but again, it's the same watershed. I've had a quick search on Google for references on the river, but I have had no such luck.
However, the initial stub is provisional. I might place a marker on the page highlighting this whilst we can investigate and verify.

I'll have a wander around the library when I get chance and see if they have any local history information regarding the rivers, even if they're only referenced in a book about something else. They do play a significant part in the history of Shaw and Crompton.~~ Peteb16 00:12, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a couple of confirmations to this discussion: the stream that runs from Pingot quarry is indeed a tributary, and joins the river Beal via a man made concrete channel at the corner of George Street playing fields closest to Dunwood park. I am not sure it has a name due to its minimal size. I'd also like to note that the Beal itself, once it has left the Littlewoods NDC site on the Linney Lane side, passes under Linney Lane and in fact runs past the new estate, as opposed to under it. The (relatively) new footpath that runs adjacent to it can be followed right through to George Street playing fields. As a minor note, that section of the river is plagued by the particularly invasive alien Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia Japonica). 82.31.236.68 22:03, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think the source of the Beal is a spring in Stoneleigh Park, Derker. The stream from here flows through a pipe under the playing fields at the back of Chepstow Drive. It emerges from this pipe, then flows down the hill and under the railway and through works at Meek Street. The river is mentioned in Higginshaw at the following website :- http://menmedia.co.uk/oldhamadvertiser/community/nostalgia/s/1021935_how_did_our_towns_worldwide_renown_go_to_the_dogsHedgehogg (talk) 21:49, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tributaries[edit]

The headings in the box are misaligned, but I don't know how to correct them. Could someone help, please? Old Father Time (talk) 19:11, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
