WCT[edit]

I've erased "also bringing ATP points because WCT events were part of Grand Prix until the end of 1981" because it's confusing.

The WCT organization was created at the end of 1967 and the WCT circuit began in 1968 as an independent circuit. Since the beginning of the ATP ranking in 1973, WCT tournaments gave ATP points except the WCT Finals (which were the "Masters" of the circuit and the special WCT events (Challenge Cup, Aetna World Cup, ...)) otherwise Roy Emerson who mainly played the WCT circuit in 1973 (he didn't play any Slam tournament that year) wouldn't have been #12 in 1973 but perhaps #50 or #100 because he just played very few Grand Prix tournaments.

In 1978 the WCT circuit was incorporated into the Grand Prix circuit and then became again independent in 1982. Then for the first time the WCT tournaments didn't give any ATP points but they gave WCT points. In 1982 there were 2 computer rankings : the ATP one and the WCT one. The latter was fairer because it sort of calculate the "true" level "of the moment" of a player . When the ATP is published at one date, for instance on 08/20/2007, in reality this is the ranking of the previous year (from 08/21/2006 to 08/20/2007) and not the true level of the moment because it takes into account for example the performances at the U.S. Open 2006 which was held 11 months ago (so a long time ago). The WCT rankings in 1982 weighed each result by his oldness. More the tournament was ancient more the weighing was low. The weight for the result of the last week was 100%, for the previous week 98%, for two weeks before 96% and so on , the weight decreasing of 2% each week. Then 50 weeks before the weight of your result was equal to 2% and beyond all your results had a weight of 0% and therefore didn't count at all. It wasn't perfect but it gave a better idea of the true level of the moment than the ATP ranking did (and still do nowadays). Now a player can be well ranked though he hasn't done anything since 6 months but his previous performances have the same weight as his recent (and bad) results.

Moreover there were also a Grand Prix ranking in 1982 used to choose the 12 players for the Masters and a WCT ranking (an addition of points so it was different from the WCT computer ranking described before) also used for the "Masters of the WCT circuit", the WCT Finals.

Conclusion in 1982 there were 4 arithmetical rankings (plus all the annual rankings made by tennis specialists).
