Name[edit]

The official name of this commune is Rivières. It is the name used by INSEE [1] and IGN [2], two French government agencies.
The convention for a given French commune is to use its official name as English Wikipedia article title. Common names, would-like-to-have-names, former names and names in local languages other than French can all be mentioned in the intro paragraph, but not be used as title. It is a matter of consistency. And consistency is key when dealing with 36,000+ communes.
Disambiguation for French communes, when needed, is in the form of [commune name], [department]. In this case the title should be Rivières, Gard. See disambiguation page here.
If the official name of the commune changes, this change will appear in an official government publication, and consequently the title of the article should be changed accordingly. No change otherwise. If you disagree with this, please discuss it at WikiProject France (recommended) or WikiProject French communes.
The article name has recently been changed from "Rivières, Gard" to "Rivières-de-Theyrargues". I am going to revert to the initial name for the reasons detailed above. Thank you. olivier (talk) 07:25, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
