what did he live on?[edit]

From 1950 to about 1975 Close lived in Europe but the royalties for the books he wrote would probably not have been enough to live on. E.g. from 1950 to 1957, his first book, is a long time. Something is incomplete. He must have had another source of income. It is also atypical that a publisher would take on one of his work without a contract for an annual book over 3 years. Unless people are academics, politicians, or prominent journalists they mostly don't get much of a look-in over 25/30. The writing career of Close looks like a cover for something?
