Re degree in modern history and appointed to command 3RGJ in 1971 reference: notes on author from his book Robin Evelegh Peace-Keeping in a Democratic Society The Lessons of Northern Ireland (1978) ISBN 0-7735-0502-4. 3RGJ had been reduced to company strength following 1968 defence review. He raised 3RGJ to Battalion strength.

He commanded 3RGJ for two tours of duty in the Upper Falls Area of Belfast each of four months duration and each based on the Springfield Road police station reference: page 1 of Evelegh's book.

First tour commenced in August 1972 reference: page 33 of Evelegh's book.
