Less about her, more about him, please![edit]

A lot of material specific to Palmer's wife Barbara Villiers has thrown this article out of balance and moved it away from its subject. This is unnecessary because she has her own article. I have therefore cut a lot of Barbara-specific passages out. Previous editor(s) have also harped on excessively about Palmer's status as a cuckold, whereas more neutral sources (notably the Dictionary of National Biography) show that he was notable for much more than being just his wife's husband. This article too therefore should be restored to balance, and to focus on Palmer himself and on his own career. I have edited to that end. Cheers. Chelseaboy (talk) 18:09, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Amend the part about its inheritence.[edit]

In the article regarding the Earldom of Castlemaine, the title can only be inherited by his sons borne by Barbara and not his children, which would seemingly imply that the remainder in the letter patent is to heir general and not heir male. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.218.41.6 (talk) 09:35, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two questions:[edit]

Why was Roger Palmer Hell-bent on marrying this wanton woman in spite of his father's warning? How was he forced to accept the Irish Earldom of Castlemaine, with Barony of Limerick? J S Ayer (talk) 18:18, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion of John Drummond with Roger Palmer[edit]

There has been confusion between Roger Palmer, 1st Earl of Castlemaine and John Drummond, 1st Earl of Melfort which may have affected their biographies. This is understandable because Palmer was Earl of Castlemaine and Drummond (amongst other titles) was Lord of Castlemains. Both were Roman Catholic aristocrats in the service of James II. This has confused Wikipedia editors (myself included, see Talk:Llanfyllin#Refuge/Asylum) and may have confused earlier writers. It is suspicious that both men are said to have been ambassadors to Rome or the Vatican. How certain are we of this? Verbcatcher (talk) 16:43, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Macaulay says ambassador to the Holy See while James was still in power, and gives convincing detail. Macaulay alludes briefly to Melfort's mission to Rome while James was in exile, but never mentions the subsidiary titles conferred with his dukedom. I doubt the similarity between the two names has caused any trouble. J S Ayer (talk) 02:05, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
