Currently the article says that the Diocese was founded in 1400. Perhaps that is when it came under Venetian rule? But it does seem to be a good deal older. According to Pius Gams, Series Episcoporum Ecclesiae Catholicae (Leipzig, 1931), p.846, there were bishops of what he calls Aless(x)ano et Leuca from at least 1282, but that the sees were suppressed in 1818. I don’t know how reliable he is, but this is his list of bishops: to get p. 846 you have to type 875 into the pagenumber box. The old Catholic Encyclopedia article has the first bishop active as early as 340, and its being mentioned as a see in the sixth century. Ian Spackman (talk) 14:16, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
