Single name titles

Will anyone mind if a disambiguation note is placed for the other two, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho? This single name titles are really polluting the namespace... --Shallot 18:34, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Ronaldinho

Just a curiosity: Ronaldo is, in fact, known as Ronaldinho back in Brazil. And Ronaldinho is known as Ronaldinho Gaúcho. --Pinnecco 10:15, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Ronaldinho at World Cup 94

What's the source of this statement in the article: "During World Cup '94, he was given the name "Ronaldinho", to distinguish him from Ronaldão in the squad."? As far as I know he was known as "Ronaldo" during 1994 FIFA World Cup, and the Brazil World Cup 94 squad doesn't have another player with a similar name. --Pkchan 05:59, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

There was really a defender called Ronaldo as well, but he didn't played any match. Brazilian press (mostly TV Globo I would say), gave them the nick names Ronaldinho and Ronaldão (Big Ronaldo and Little Ronaldo, or Ronaldo the Great, Ronaldo the Small). I don't believe the nickname Ronaldinho ever caught outside Brazil. --Abu Badali 15:21, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

I seem to remember he was known as Ronaldo in WC '94 but he definitely listed as Ronaldinho in the Umbro Cup in England in 1995.--Ukdan999 00:54, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

The official squad lists in 1994 listed the two as Ronaldão (the defender) and Ronaldo (our buck-toothed friend). It is at least partly a myth that Brazilians call Ronaldo 'Ronaldinho', his shirt name is always RONALDO for and in Brazil, and Ronaldinho Gaúcho's is always RONALDINHO. They don't change their names willy-and-indeed-nilly, see the two Gilberto's in the 2006 squad. Mjefm 18:42, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Removing Link

I have removed the ronaldo video website as it refers to christiano Ronaldo.

Disambiguation

Seeing as there are 3 footballers called "Ronaldo": Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldo Rodrigues de Jesus and Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, there should be a disambiguation page. Cokehabit 17:32, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima is by far the most well-known Ronaldo. The English-language press has long developed the scheme to disambiguate them:
And I don't see a need to depart from the way they are commonly described in the English-language press. This translates to the following organisation in Wikipedia:

Why is this page a disambiguation. Ronaldo clearly refers to the Brazillian striker. The others all use alternative full names. josh (talk) 21:16, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

I think we're all in agreement. Slumgum | yap | stalk | 22:29, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

There's a problem here.

There needs to be a page called simply "Ronaldo" that is an article about the "Luis Nazario de Lima" one (the "Ronaldo", the one that even americans know of, no offense, but come on that says something) , and on there, there should be that notice at the top that says "see Ronaldo Disambiguation", that leads to the current "Ronaldo" Page. Just practicality, is all.

Ronaldo Luíz Nazário de Lima

Shouldn't this article be moved to Ronaldo Luíz Nazário de Lima and Ronaldo will automatically be redirected to it as this is his correct and full name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yonatanh (talkcontribs)

It's generally preferred to use people's common name when titling articles. eg. Pelé  SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  13:35, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Like suggested before, I also think "Ronaldo" should redirect to the disambiguation page. This Ronaldo will retire some day, and people will be more interested in reading about Portugese Cristiano_Ronaldo. Medico80 16:44, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Is there a link to how\why it's "generally preferred"? Yonatanh 21:37, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

I just looked; I don't think there is. There is an article Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people), which should really have a policy on Brazilians, but WP:NC says:Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature.  SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  03:43, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Wrong Name

The given name "Ronaldo Luíz" is wrong. The orthography of the name in Portuguese should be either "Luís" (with accute accent, ending with "s") or "Luiz" (no accent, with a "z"), but never "Luíz". (See, for example, the talk page on Lula.) --HYC 14:45, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Son

I do not know anything about this but I saw that his son's name is Ronald. I was curious whether it is actually Ronald or if that is just a typo and it is Ronaldo (jr.) Again, I am probably wrong but I was just curious.

  • Support This individual may be the one most associated with "Ronaldo" in sport, but Wikipedia is ecumenical. Ronaldo is a normal name, first or last, and I don't think that it's reasonable to presume that a search for it is a search for this individual. ENeville (talk) 06:24, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Support moving to Ronaldo (Brazilian player) or Ronaldo (football player), but not to Ronaldo de Lima, a name that isn't used for this player. Ronaldo should by all means become a disambiguation page. Húsönd 13:10, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Support per discussion, and per ENeville. I think Ronaldo (football player) would be fine, as are most of the other suggestions. Mjb1981 (talk) 09:14, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose. He is referred to by one name; no one else on the dab page is. The naming here does not conflict with other people with the first name "Ronaldo" - the only articles it could conflict with would be Ronaldo (name) or an article on someone else known by the same single name. Unfortunately, Ronaldo (name) is not an article about the name; it might be more accurately titled List of people with the first name Ronaldo, and would then probably be a candidate for deletion. Also note that some people who have expressed opinions have done so only below. Dekimasuよ! 05:25, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
    • Dab pages generally link unpiped, so the appearance of the link Ronaldo on the dab page follows from the title here, and therefore shouldn't be used as a guide. Also pages on names (Ronaldo (name)) are typical, if typically inglorious. ENeville (talk) 18:02, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose per my comments below. PC78 (talk) 23:57, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Discussion

Any additional comments:

Can we agree that Ronaldo is a name used by many people, including many famous footballers. (When I hear the name Ronaldo, I think of the footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.)

The Ronaldo article should list the various Ronaldos instead of assuming that people will only be interested in one of them. I would suggest a good name for this article would be Ronaldo de Lima.

I don't think that the link at the top of the page to Ronaldo (disambiguation) (which in turn redirects to the Ronaldo (name) page) is enough. Other names shared by many famous people are all disambiguation sites, as this one should be. - Mjb1981 (talk) 23:24, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

You should have taken the silence as a no rather than a sure, go ahead. - Dudesleeper / Talk 13:00, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
No the name should'nt be changed to Ronaldo de lima. First of all Cristiano Ronaldo wouldn't have become so well known and so popular so quick if their wasn't already an extremely well known player simply known as 'RONALDO'. Everybody knows Ronaldo for Ronaldo you never hear commentators in games say Ronaldo De Lima has scored! It's simply Ronaldo and has been for a very long time. IF you change Ronaldo's article to Ronaldo De Lima not many people will recognise who the player is. It should stay as Ronaldo for the original player, at least untill he retires. Just about everybody knows Cristiano Ronaldo's FIRST and LAST name. - Belija91 (talk) 13:08, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Everyone who follows the English premiership knows Ronaldo to be Cristiano Ronaldo, nobody ever says Cristiano Ronaldo has scored, it is always just Ronaldo, just like Ronaldo de lima. People looking for Cristiano Ronaldo will usually search for just Ronaldo, knowing the first name is not the same as knowing how to spell it. It isn't as if Cristiano Ronaldo is a mundane player - he is considered by most to be the best player in the English Premiership.

All other articles has the person's full name, why is Ronaldo different? I don't mind what it is changed to, but leaving it as just Ronaldo when there are others of similar fame is favouritism. I'm not saying that Cristiano Ronaldo should be just Ronaldo, but the Ronaldo page should treat each player equally. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mjb1981 (talkcontribs) 00:36, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Ronaldo De Lima is commonly known as Ronaldo. Cristiano Ronaldo is commonly known as Cristiano Ronaldo. There is already a dab page in place which does its job just fine. PC78 (talk) 16:28, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
This is not true. Everyone refers to Cristiano Ronaldo as Ronaldo.Mjb1981 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 16:33, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
Erm, no they don't. Who is "everyone", and where is your evidence? PC78 (talk) 17:26, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm not saying no-one knows his first name, but turn on the TV, or radio, and you'll hear him called Ronaldo, just Ronaldo. Mjb1981 (talk) 17:24, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
If it's a news segment, he'll be mentioned as Cristiano Ronaldo first, then Ronaldo from that point on, just like any other player. - Dudesleeper / Talk 17:39, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
But most people looking for the Wikipedia article would just type in Ronaldo, when he is discussed he is usually called Ronaldo, just as this Ronaldo is. Mjb1981 (talk) 16:06, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
That's other people's laziness then. If they're football fans, they'll know typing in Ronaldo in a search will bring up the Brazilian. - Dudesleeper / Talk 17:10, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, that may be true, but for someone who only knows about the English Premiership, or someone who doesn't know that much about football, they may not know that, and may not know Cristiano Ronaldo's first name. As an encyclopaedia, Wikipedia should give equal status to the two players and give unknowledgeable and lazy people just as much access as those who are knowledgeable. Mjb1981 (talk) 09:09, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

If a move is made, I think that the standard for Latin names would indicate Ronaldo Nazário, as I think that Nazário would be his father's last name and Lima his mother's. ENeville (talk) 06:29, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Ronaldo (el fenomeno) is more famous than Cristiano Ronaldo, he have a famous nickname. When they're famous, R9 known as Ronaldo and R7 known as Cristiano Ronaldo (since 2003 - 2007), 1 year is too short. 58.186.10.156 (talk) 08:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
