Biography of Rudolf von Jaksch

Rudolf von Jaksch, or Rudolf Jaksch Ritter von Wartenhorst was the son of the physician Anton Jaksch Ritter von Wartenhorst (1810-1887). He studied in Prague and Strassburg, and obtained his medical doctorate at Prague in 1878. The same year he became an assistant under professor Theodor Albrecht Edwin Klebs (1834-1913).

From 1879 to 1881 he worked with his father, from 1881 to 1882 with Alfred Pribram (1841-1912) in Prague and from 1882 with Carl Wilhelm Hermann Nothnagel (1842-1905) in Vienna. Jaksch was habilitated as Privatdozent of internal medicine from 1883.

In 1887 he was called to Graz as professor of paediatrics and, in 1899, became professor of internal medicine and head of the II internal clinic at the Carl-Ferdinand-Universität (the German university) in Prague, where a new and modern clinic was built on his initiative. The clinic had a cold-water therapy institute, laboratory, library, lecture room with daylight from above, and was fitted up with glass, steel, and marble. It was opened with pomp and circumstances in 1899. The baths constructed for the clinic were awarded an honorary diploma at the Berliner Krankenpflege-Ausstellung in 1899.

Von Jaksch was a member of numerous German and foreign societies. A list of publications by him and his students ranks more than 200 titles. His work concerns a wide field of medical chemistry and paediatrics.
