Cause of his macular degeneration[edit]

It is well-established that Russell Short has macular degeneration (see the Rotary sources and the Sunday Age source in the article), but the macular degeneration article says that the term is usually used to refer to the condition in old age, not in childhood, when a more specific term should be used. Stargardt disease is a common (and hereditary) cause of childhood macular degeneration, but I wonder if we can find a source that goes into more specifics about his actual condition?
