The article should be expanded to give more idea of what SIMPLE is. The provided external references do not ideally match the topic. http://www.jabber.org/protocol/xmpp-simple.shtml is very biased. Just IMHO. Grossmann 00:20, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

XMPP-SIMPLE Feature Comparison[edit]

The external link "XMPP-SIMPLE Feature Comparison" seems hardly objective. It reads like a list of features that XMPP has and SIMPLE lacks, rather than an honest comparison. Furthermore, it's published by the Jabber foundation (advocates of XMPP). Unless there's a good argument for keeping it, I'm going to remove it or hopefully replace it with a more objective comparison if one exists.--Teemuk 09:05, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption[edit]

The article could use some more information on where SIMPLE is actually used, because I guess most people who use instant messaging are a bit lucky if they can find SIMPLE among the supported protocols in their client software... SIMPLE is used my most SIP soft phones and also by some SIP hard phones. Look into the List of SIP software or Comparison of VoIP software for soft phones. --Kgfleischmann (talk) 05:04, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I still do not understand your intention. In the introduction the article explains, what SWING is, a suite of IETF specifications for IM and presence. What I want to avoid are lists about implementors and implementations which easily can be used by spammers to unload their stuff. I have a similar opinion, I would like to have some more information about programs using protocol SIMPLE. I consider that a programs using protocol SIMLE is something different than "a software phone." I consider software phone to is something to replace normal phone. Need for encyclopedic context[edit]

This article at present can best be described as a technical reference, not an encyclopedic entry. To improve this article requires context defining the notability and history of this protocol, not merely a technical description of it. I would like to see covered:

History - when was this protocol conceived, by whom, and why?
How successful has it become? Is it now ubiquitous in VoIP and mobile devices, or is it a niche technology.
What are the reasons for the successful (or not) adoption?

Unfortunately I am no longer an expert in this area, though 5 years ago I was a VoIP architect/consultant and back then, SIMPLE was the next big thing in convergence, especially around presence. I haven't heard anything since, so can only assume that SIMPLE hasn't become a global standard???

About SIMPLE's position, it is part of the SIP protocol suite, the standard for (among other things) presence implementations in SIP based equippement, "normal" SIP as well as IMS. Possibly this is difficult to be seen from a consumers perspective, as SIMPLE is a bunch of technologies in the background. A good starting point for investigation about this standard suite is the project page on www.ietf.org. As the actual state of SIMPLE has a lot to do with IMS, so that's where you investigate, too. SIMPLE (Standard Interface for Military Platform Link Evaluation)[edit]

This is a military messaging protocol defined in STANAG 5602. Refer to Link 16, J-Series messages and Tactical Data Links (TDLs or TADILs). Should be dis-ambiguated from the SIP-based SIMPLE messaging protocol. Note also users may search for lower case (simple) as well as upper case (SIMPLE).
