Misleading/Wrong[edit]

Port 587 is the submission port, and uses STARTTLS. It's not right to say that it's TLS.

SMTPS uses port 465, and would be for mandatory TLS-encrypted submission. But it's deprecated.

I will fix this article soon. MrDemeanour (talk) 08:35, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Port 465 is no longer deprecated. It exists on the current IANA list and is used for TLS transmissions, as the article states and seen at 2018 Port Registry. --KitchM (talk) 15:02, 4 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Terminology including capitalization & pronunciation[edit]

Does IANA specify "official capitalization"? Where? What is meant by the sentence 'When describing the IANA service registration, the official capitalization is "smtps"'?

In this context, how do "experts" pronounce submissions? "Submissions" is the plural of submission. "Submission s" might suggest secure submission; possibly more relevant. Neither term is particularly informative.

More meaningful terms appearing frequently: TLS on connect and TLS-on-connect. Equivalent to submissions?

Given the significance of email, the dodginess of terminology is astonishing. This article is appropriate to clearing the haze but certainly needs work. =8~/
