SPYDER & Iron Dome comparison table II[edit]

Is the Iron Dome really comparable to the other highly mobile short range SAMs out there? If this has a 70km range, should it not be compared to mid range weapons like the Patriot, BUK, or S-300? Historical development[edit]

Does anybody have any books or knowledge about this air defence system's development? I couldn't find a single source that mentions its design history. I also couldn't find anything that mentions why it isn't operated by Israel. My guess is that it was either a) designed for the export market or B) was a stepping stone for the Iron Dome. I'm increasingly suspecting that the launch platforms, C&C and radar from SPYDER will be used by the IDF to field David's Sling as a high performance multi-threat mobile SAM system. I think the python/DERBY configuration may be export only. Further suspect that Machbet may be upgraded to take Python/DERBY and the IDF are using existing chassis to save resources in the military budget. Note the machbet can netcentrically link up to other radars. Just hunches at this point. Irondome (talk) 01:08, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

SPYDER & Iron Dome comparison table[edit]

It looks very wrong to me. Iron dome has a maximum interception range of 70km at the moment, and is probably even as we speak now closer to 150km due to ongoing developments. At the moment we have wildly wrong I/D performance figures in that table. I would question the wisdom of having I/D as a comparison system to SPYDER in any event in that table. Hi there. The 10 km figure refers the maximum engagement range against "tradition Air Defence targets". It appears that the 70 km figure refers to the range of the mortar and rockets rather than the actual missile itself. It's hard to tell if the 70 km is the range of the missile itself [when used against rockets] or if it's the maximum range that such a rocket can be fired from. Hi AK. I think the 10km figure is the maximum altitude engagement envelope. An altitude figure of around 30,000 ft was originally in the I/D article sources, but I cant locate it now. I think a much longer engagement range for aircraft is more likely. If it can hit a Fjar at 70 km and at altitude, I dont think a target as slow and as big as an aircraft would have much chance at similar distances. I think it is referring to the range of the tamir rocket itself. The rationalising of the article layout is looking great by the way. Good that the India order has been at last confirmed source-wise.
