Dates[edit]

Mayanists have not settled on a standard way to convert Long Counts to western calendar dates. Many of these found in books about the Maya use either the Proleptic Gregorian calendar, the highly suspect Thompson 584285 correlation (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar#Correlations_between_Western_calendars_and_the_Long_Count), or are just plain wrong. The Proleptic Gregorian calendar is not used outside of mayanism - for example by historians and astronomers. There is basically no evidence for the 584285 correlation. Wikipedia hasn't settled on a standard western calendar but the templates that are widely used in articles about the Maya use the GMT correlation. For these reasons editors have decided to use Long Counts and vague dates (year month) in many articles like this one. Also edits require reliable citations.
