I happen to be personally acquainted with Justice Salim Joubran (note spelling). Although a redirect exists from this alternate spelling, I suggest that this spelling should be the main article. I know that he himself spells his surname as Joubran, and am in posession of his official business card which also spells it in this fashion. I intend to move this page if no objections exist. It is generally considered inappropriate to call a Maronite an arab unless they prefer that distinction themselves, as most Maronites are believed to be of Phoenician or Assyrian ancestry
I'm not sure it's "generally" considered inappropriate; Maronites vary on their self-identification. In any case, the situation in Israel is somewhat different than the situation in Lebanon or the Lebanese-American disapora, and it doesn't appear to be controversial in Israel to call Joubran "an Arab". In fact he was chosen specifically out of a desire to appoint an Arab to the Supreme Court. --Delirium (talk) 08:21, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It would be nice to get some better sources on how Joubran self-identifies, and/or how he is commonly identified, rather than the current smattering of editors randomly inserting how they prefer to describe him with no citations. As far as I can tell, "Israeli Arab" is the most common way he's identified, at least in English-language media, and some sources add that he is "of Maronite descent". But it's possible I'm not looking at the right sources, so better ones are fine also. --Delirium (talk) 19:17, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Legally speaking, since 2014 Maronites in Israel are registered as ethnic Arameans. Until 2014, he was probably registered as Arab or "unspecified", so i guess from legal point of view he was "Arab" at the time of his appointment, but in present this is no longer correct. It is a complicated issue, so i tried to tag him as Christian Maronite and asked for references for him branded as "Arab" (which is probably correct for the time).GreyShark (dibra) 10:06, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
