Pronunciation of surname (for correct transcription)[edit]

Is this Arabic surname pronounced "Toama" or "Tuama"? The French and Italian interwiki page names are inconsistent, and the Hebrew spelling doesn't distinguish between these two vowels. Knowing the correct pronunciation would indicate which vowel should be used in romanizing the subject's and page's names. -- Deborahjay (talk) 22:06, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Based on my virtually nonexistent knowledge of Arabic, I would say it's phonemically /u/ and phonetically [o]. Standard Arabic has only the vowel phonemes /i u a/ (long and short), but /u/ is lowered to [o] in the presence of pharyngeal(ized) consonants like ط /tˤ/ and ع /ʕ/. +Angr 14:38, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Most probably, it is [tˤoʕma]. In Egypt there is a similar word pronounced [tˤeʕmɑ] which is written transcribed in Arabic script with the same spelling, meaning “delicious/cute” (s. f.); (m.: [tˤeʕem]). --Mahmudmasri (talk) 06:00, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
