IPA for Samadhi[edit]

Can someone who knows please put in the proper pronunciation for this word? Preferably using IPA. Thanks! brain (talk) 00:56, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can't type in IPA, unfortunately, but the pronunciation has a stress on the second vowel, which is long. The others are short. "dh" is a breathy form of the letter "d". The first vowel is "schwa". Moonsell (talk) 08:53, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese transliteration[edit]

The pronunciation given for the Chinese characters was incomplete (two syllables of pinyin given for a three syllable word, and no pronunciation for the second set of three at all) so I corrected that. Also I deleted "or 定" - originally it said "sānmèi 三昧地 or 三摩地 or 定." Was this meant to mean that 定 is an alternate name for samadhi, or that 三摩定 is an alternate way of writing it? It was unclear, and I couldn't find the answer after searching the web, so I deleted it. Feel free to add it back in a more clear fashion if it is in fact correct in some way. The Chinese sanmei (two characters) is the most common term for samadhi in East Asia. Like many transliterations of Sanskrit terms, it leaves off the last syllable (cf. Amitabha Buddha => Emituo Fo). The longer sanmodi (three characters) is the less common transliteration of samadhi, but is more accurate. Ding (one character) is an extremely common term for samadhi, but is a translation (meaning fixity or concentration) rather than a transliteration. All three terms are correct, but sanmei and ding are most common. Sanmei was used by Kumarajiva's translations, while Xuanzang's translations generally use ding instead. Samādhi and Samadhi[edit]

Also started a discussion on Talk:Samadhi.
There are two very substantial articles on the (for me, single) subject of Samādhi: Samadhi ("Hinduist version") and Samadhi (Buddhism). The best would be to have one article for the common elements in both views. No question to say that one Dharma is better than the other. Actually the samadhi page is a general one that covers Hinduism, Buddhism, and a little bit of Sikhism. It could be expanded with more material, and is not exclusively for samadhi in Hinduism. Tengu800 11:43, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
