I just translated article Samory Touré in from the French wiki--obviously I should have done a better search for variant spellings before translating. It does however seem to have some useful info. Anyone who wants to merge some of it in is welcome to take what they want and delete the rest...

Aggressive French

The word 'aggressively' was removed from line 22 as POV when describing the French expansion of the 1870s. It's actually a fair descriptor, but I'll have to get documentation to back up this assertion before I put it back in. European expansion efforts have been described as imperialistic in a number of sources by a variety of types of authors. Naming Conventions

Samori should be referred to consistently in the article. The entry is Samori, but that particular spelling isn't actually among the versions listed in the first para. Then in some sections he's referred to as Samore, in others as Samori. 71.179.70.36 (talk) 00:52, 30 July 2012 (UTC) chris

What is the best translitteration of his name ? Samori or Samory Toure ? In the french historical litterature, I have the impression that we can read only "Samori" (without Touré) or "Samory Touré" with his name expressed. What do you think is the best one and why ? The French article has the correct spelling of Samory Touré. This is mostly anecdotal, but I was born in that part of the world and learned about him in school while growing up. The above name is the only one I know him by. Seeing his name spelled as "Ture", which is a variation on this last name I'd never seen before back home, is what drove me to visit the talk page. Mythology?

I think it would be interesting if the legacy section for Samori Ture included some of the local legends about him. Jan Jansen's book "Epic Adventures" describes the symbolic important of Samori in Africa still today.For certain tribes, stories about Samori and his exploits have become an important part of local mythology. These stories, such as the French capturing Samori's voice to play for other groups, shed important light on how France's occupation is viewed by the occupied places. Additionally, the debate about whether or not the story of Samori is considered an “epic” could be its own section, possibly linking to an article about an African epic. Needs some expansion in structure of his state (which was interesting: he moved the entire thing a hundred + miles east at one point), connections to previous Malinke state structures vs connection to fula jihad states (little bit of both), his reputation in the areas he ruled (ranges from outright hate by much of the population -- both now and at the time -- to view by many in the post colonial world that he was a hero).
